Breakfast

I am new to the Primal Blueprint and I am having issues with what to have for breakfast. I live at a hall of residence (coz I am at University) so don't have access to eggs and stuff (I also don't have a microwave/oven etc so can't cook anything). For breakfast I generally have yoghurt (I know, not primal!) with whey protein powder (also not primal!) and some nuts and seeds.
Is this bad? And does anyone have any possible other ideas? I am a very much a breakfast person and I still like to have a relatively large breakfast. For lunch and dinner I have salad with some protein, which I think is ok?
Thanks :)Posted 6 months ago # -
Yogurt may not be strictly primal, but it's a better choice than your other options - pastries, donuts, cereal, granola, etc. Plus, the fact that you add whey protein (pretty safe stuff for the most part - it's juts dairy protein) and nuts/seeds makes it a very decent breakfast.
I would suggest canned sardines, but I work from home and don't have to worry about offending coworkers or schoolmates in the morning.
Just make sure your yogurt is unsweetened and full fat. As long as you can tolerate dairy, a fermented type like yogurt is just fine.

Bummer that you don't have access to a kitchen or a microwave. We had both in my dorm, which was a relief.
Sardines are yummy. Canned tuna might be another option. I don't know how PB it is, but you can also find pickled eggs (if you like them). Then there's always the option of leftovers from dinner... if you're willing to eat them cold, which depending on what it is, can be pretty tasty.

Sardines, tuna, etc are good but I wouldn't over do it given the contamination of seafoods.
Do you have a fridge in the room? Can you put leftovers from dinner? Any way to get some hard boiled eggs? The local Trader Joe's has bags of them.
Raw nuts and fruit would be decent and pretty filling.
Avocados + pepitas == tasty.
The other option is just fast until lunch and then chow down.

Ithink fasting over breakfast every day will set you up for some later afternoon exhaustion, and it always makes my cravings worse. IF is fine, but chronic lack of breakfast...well it doens't work for me, and I see a lot of clients who improve once they eat the breakfast with the protein. Could you get a hold of a hand held stick blender and make a good smoothie, though your breakfast is similiar to that already.
how about jerky? if you can get a hold of some that isn't full of crap. Old Sante Fe trail is a decent brand available online, with no added crap, but may not be free range beef.
Avocado boats are a easy tasty meal. I slice a bell pepper in quarters, slice an avocado in quaters and lay inside the pepper boats. Then I take a single sardine and lay that on top of the avocado and serve!
Definately watch the tuna intake for contaminants, but as far as i undersand, sardines are fairly clean, being such a small fish, they don't concentrate heavy metals in the same way as larger fish like tuna. Wild alaskan salmon in a can is a safe option too for breakfast salads mixed with nuts, avocados, etc.
They dont offer scrambled eggs at your dining hall at all? Wow...I'd tear my hair out! I wish you luck with breakfast discoveries!Posted 6 months ago # -
This probably sounds gross, but I really like it. a scoop of protein powder ( I have one that has no sugar, just natural) and a scoop of coconut flour, I mix them together, then form a porridge consistency with filtered water, but you could use almond milk too. I add berries and some pumpkin or sunflower seeds. the coconut flour has a natural sweetness and its extremely filling. in the winter its good to heat through, but coming into summer its kind of nice cool. would be good with a dollop of fage total. and some strawberries. I have used this to replace my oats in the morning and havent looked back.
Good advice to stay away from tuna, I gave myself mercury poisoning from eating canned tuna, seriously, so stay away from it.

I've become a huge fan of full-fat Greek yogurts, particularly the Fage and Greek Gods brands. Fage full-fat comes only in large tubs (I eat'em for lunch!), but the 2% variety, which still has a ton of protein, does come in the smaller containers, more like traditional yogurt cups. Stuff is insanely good.
During the work week, though, I fast -- I generally don't eat until after 1 or 2PM, unless some meeting is in the way and I need to get some food in before 4 or 5. Some days I actually go until dinnertime, then unleash on whatever food's around (only "bad" one I'm still really susceptible to is ice cream).

Thanks for the ideas, I love sardines but I had never thought of having them for breakfast. I also love almonds and apples, but I don't know if I can eat apples? Coz they are high in sugar?
I also love biltong, which is kind of like jerky, i think? But I had never thought of having it for breakfast. Yum, all my favourite foods and now breakfast foods :)
62shelby - how often did you eat tuna to get mercury poisoning? If I eat canned tuna every 1-2 days, is that too often? ThanksPosted 6 months ago # -
FWIW you can minimize the effects of mercury poisoning by getting sources af ALA and selenium with any foods that may contain traces as both have been shown to chelate mercury.

My tip is to make "powerballs", I stole the idea from a Swedish triathlete. Smash your favourite types of nut with a pestle and mortar, mix with some yummy "hard" type of fat (I use butter or coconut fat). Add some cacao, roll in coconut flakes, and my favorite snack/minimeal is done. I eat them whenever i want, to breakfast, as a snack when working in the garden, anytime, and with great pleasure.

deepthought, I just made a powerball and it was awesome! So simple, but amazing taste. I would think the variations are endless. Adding dried fruit and a touch of honey would make them an excellent and easy dessert treat too.
Thanks for sharing!

powerballs are the best, and I sometimes use honey too. some dark chocolate will also add extra taste.

I just made a powerball and it was incredible – so yummy! I used almonds and butter and coconut and it was good
Coma – I take vit E supplements with selenium and also flaxseed oil (which I think has ALA?) so does that mean it will be ok? Thanks :)Posted 6 months ago # -
My newfound favourite to put in powerballs is the "paranut"(in swedish), i think it is brazil nut in english. very fatty and tasty.
Usually i dont make one powerball. I make a bowl and kepp in the fridge for 2-3 days. Perfect for an old sugarychocholate freak like me.Posted 6 months ago # -
Apples are awesome. That is why Mark went with "Daily Apple" for his website. They may have natural sugars in them but they are high in fiber, which gives them a good glycemic index.
Also, Eggland's Best sells pre-boiled eggs, cracked and peeled. If you have a mini-frige you can keep these in your room and have a couple of these in the morning.

The ALA in flax oil is Alpha linolenic acid, not Alpha lipoic acid. Two different ALA's.
Posted 6 months ago # -
and, for the record, even though alpha lipoic acid is a fabulous anti oxidant and can help recycle other nutrients, its a very powerful chelator of heavy metals in particular mercury. it crosses the blood brain barrier and can remove it from the brain, BUT, it can also recirculate it, so for anyone whom is carrying a heavy metal burden it would be unwise to use this without supervision or at least some research. speaking from experience.

I probably wouldn't supplement, just make sure I chose whole food sources with sources of either in my diet.
Posted 6 months ago # -
So, I should just try and get alpha lipoic acid from food sources? I googled it and I got green plants and animal foods? So salad and meat? Maybe I should just cut down on the tuna...

Hi Hannah
For breakfast:
I put three tablespoons of natural full fat yoghurt in about a third of a cup of water with 30 ml of "Melrose' cod liver oil and drink it.
I follow it with 30ml of apple cider vinegar, 1 teaspoon of raw honey, a teaspoon of tumeric, one teaspoon of crushed ginger, one teaspoon of crushed chille and two teaspoons of crushed garlic in warm water.
I then eat a tomato.
I suggest that you use smaller amounts of garlic, ginger and chilli until you get used to it.
You will need a 'fridge but there is nothing to cook.
The Tumeric is a recent addition as I 'heard' that it assisted cholesteral levels but I have no proof as I haaven't has a recent test. I have been using garlic, ginger, chilli mixture for several years and the cod liver oil for a little over a year.
I'm 67 years and I don't get colds or flu anymore.
I haven't started the primal program yet - i have ordered the book -but I have followed some of the recomendations in "Nourishing Traditions"

Hi Hannah
One of my favourite breakfasts is carrot & apple salad- it's sweet and crunchy. I grate an apple and a carrot, mix togther and add a handful of raisons and some powdered cinamon and leave it overnight in a sealed container so that the raisns to plump up. It's nice on its own or with a blob of greek yoghurt. I also like a fresh fruit salad with seasonal fruit (and sometimes with double thick cream).

jpip,
lol! I always figured it was a reference to "An apple a day keeps the doctor away." But you are right. Apples are great. Tasty, filling, nutritious...Posted 6 months ago # -

I have found that not eating breakfast is only a problem when I am in sugar burning mode, after having spiked my insulin levels. If you eat a diet of high fat and high protein all the time, especially the night before you are about to start a fast you shouldn't have a problem with hunger, and if anything you will be more focused, which is what I have experienced. Your body is in slow fat burning mode, which gives you constant energy, and gives your body's digestive system a long due rest.

Tish, that sounds a lot like one of my favorite salads, only mine has sunflower seeds and a mayo/lemon juice dressing. So yummy.

Let's not forget jerkey. mmmm...jerkey
Posted 6 months ago # -
Thanks Comley I will try that - I actualy really love garlic. When I was little I used to just eat it - my parents thought I was a very unusual child!
Tishkaminix - I had never thought of combining apples and carrots, but it sounds good and I love them both. And I agree fresh fruit salad is delicious and possibly one of the best ways to start the day.
Jpippenger - have you tried biltong? It's like jerky but, if possible yummier, it is absolutely delicious
