@StoneAgeQueen Well, having grown up in the country I can attest that most local beef lives in lush green fields most of the year and gets silage in the winter. The farmer usually gives them some feed each day, but it's not a lot. Can't say the same for pigs or chickens.

I'll be in my butcher tomorrow - if I get a chance I'll quiz him on the meat, and what goes into the bacon.

Well, I only got over this morning and they were pretty busy, but did some online investigation when I saw they were a member of the Guild of Q butchers (Thomas McCreery - Ormeau). All beef and lamb is grass-fed local, 21 day aged. Free-range eggs are £1.30 for 6 large. They have free-range chickens for £9.99 which are pretty big (smaller reg. chicken is £4.50).

The only problem I have is most counter cuts aren't priced so I have to watch my wallet. They're pretty helpful.

I also found out that Coffey's on the Lisburn Rd. is famous for game meat if you ever want something different.

For veg. there are a few farm shops around, but 1 with a website and free delivery within 15miles. It appears they are happy to customise a selection for you and do regular delivery. I might try them, but I'd like to visit first.

    @all PB UK people

Finally, I discovered somewhere to bulk-buy nuts, dried fruit and coconut in the UK. Probably what you are buying in the supermarket anyway by the looks of it, but cheaper!

Hope that's of help, I'd better give Google a rest now :)

  3. Does anyone know a good source of coconut oil?
I'm tempted to try it, as I'm now finding olive oil overpowering (never have been keen on it).

Now I know different brands taste different, and I'm looking for something with as little flavour as possible!

Also we(as in my employers) are working on something, so there may be an upcoming unashamed plug for grass-fed, locally raised meat which benefits charity :D

Incidentally, does anyone here go hunting/rabbiting? I'm mulling over getting an air rifle, strictly to get critters for the pot.

Thanks for the HBS Foods link twentyclicks!
NorthernMonkey, I have yet to find a coconut oil without a coconut taste. I use Cocovida, but for cooking when I don't want a coconut taste, I use Ghee from the Puka brand (I am able to get it frommy local health shop), but is quite expensive.

  6. Quick heads-up...
Lidl had the most amazing chorizo in this weekend, for under £2.
It's the "Dulano Chorizo paprika-salami", 300g. It does have glucose syrup in, but info says 1g carb per 100g.

  7. Oh yeah I picked up some of that last week! I little bit of chorizo goes a long way - been adding it to spice up my chicken salads (cooking it releases all the lovely oil and flavours)...got enough left now for some primal jambalaya sometime this week :)

@NorthernMonkey - I get my Coconut oil from myprotein (http://www.myprotein.co.uk/mp-max/foods/coconpure/). Seems a good product and is always delivered very promptly.

@Tishkaminx - I live in Formby, just north of Liverpool. I'll give you a wave next time I'm the the beach.

I'm new! I'm a 30 (ack) year woman hoping to learn lots more about primal living.

I live in Blackpool, but I come from East Anglia and oh how I think I could eat SO great if I still lived there!

I have lost over 120 pounds so far, eating without processed carbs, but still grains etc and having read through many pages of the blog here I realise how much sense it makes and I have spent the last couple weeks eating more primally.

I am not eating totally primal and not sure how far I will take it, as I am still trying to loose weight and controlling calories is the only way I can manage this as I dont have a 'full' switch and too easily over eat.

  14. Yeah I'm out slateford way, right next to the big ASDA I can walk around in that place for hours and not find anything that doesn't contain some form of grain. I find it so ironic that their "healthy food" section is made up entirely of high-carb grain products.

  24. @ Grokker, damn, I got fed up with waiting so I shipped it over from the US! Worked out about the same though.
I wonder if we'll get more UK folks here now PB is available "easily"?

I'm in Exeter for four months starting January, but I'm a Canadian whose permanent address is in Finland. Compared to Finland, the UK offers a cornucopia of healthful food! I am so happy to be here!

Hi everyone, another Londoner here! (W)

I've recently placed an order with WellHungMeat.com for organic, grass fed beef, mutton and pork, but I've still to receive it. I'll post my review when it arrives (and I start eating it!)

  27. Quick word of warning for budget-conscious Groks!
I got a pack of frozen lamb chump chops from Lidl the other day. Now normally I go for local, free range, etc, but I figured that New Zealand lamb WAS pretty much free range etc. Plus these can be cooked from frozen and so on.

Anyway, I wouldn't call it lamb! Maybe a geriatric ram?? I like strong flavours but I struggled with this. You know how goat milk lingers in your sinuses? Yeees well.

So yeah it's edible, but if you're not keen on STRONG taste, best to avoid :)

I hope there's only one of me! Hi Dave.

Northern Monkey (you're not from Hartlepool are you?) - I never liked lamb, to be honest. As a child I'd always be upset whent he Sunday roast was lamb (rather than beef or fowl of some sort). There's something about the texture I dislike.
I do like venison though, and fortuantely I can get it in my local Sainsbury's and Waitrose. It's quite pricey though so it's more of an occassional thing.
I tried rabbit last year and it tasted like old socks, so I understand where you're coming from.

  30. No, not Hartlepool, Yorkshire born but currently living in Cheshire. Sadly I still have to work with a Yorkshire budget, haha :D
