Hey, I live in between Watford and Harrow, North London. Anyone near? Where do you english PB'ers shop? This is the hardest part of being primal for me, finding good places to shop!

I'm in Edinburgh, though not a UK native either. I have family in London (were in Belsize Park, but just moved...not sure where...I don't know London at all) but they are not primal so I do not speak to them (joking!).
For what it's worth, I prefer to shop at Waitrose (expensive!) but will shop at Tesco in a pinch. I also have a veg box delivered every week that permits me to choose the vegetables (so I don't end up with potatoes and beans) and of course the butcher/fishmonger are good options. But it can be quite time-consuming to get the "right" foods.

Yeah, lots of people tell me waitrose is good. Apparently they have good burgers and sausages (high meat content) as opposed to the usual 47% pork you get in regular store bought sausages.
Thanks, I'll get myself down to waitrose!

I'm in Knutsford.
Waitrose is good but expensive,I prefer Booths but not many of those about,Farms shops for meat .
Some of the sausage in Booths are 98% meat although they seem to be stocking them less and less.Posted 9 months ago # -
Welcome Kane and Revans87,
I hear you about the shopping "issue".
Because I am on a budget, I try and get reduced items in the conventional supermarkets, sometimes going to Booths in Knutsford, love the UNICORN in Chorlton for veg and fruit. I am always on the hunt for food when I can find it;)

I dont think I've ever heard of Knutsford... Where abouts is it?
I went to a farm shop today, and got some beautiful prize winning sausages, and picked up 24 eggs for £4.
Good times!

Hi Maranne and other UK people!
I'm also from UK and am a native! I live in the South, in Kent. Nice to see other Primal people this side of the Atlantic! Be good to keep in touch and exchange any food/shopping tips for over here. I shop for a lot of organic produce in Tesco, but also go to farm shops if I can get organics, and Waitrose is very good, but can be pricey!!
Jordanna xPosted 9 months ago # -
Hey Jordanna! Where abouts in Kent are you? My girlfriend lives near Dartford and my best friend goes to university in Canterbury, so I'm over in kentg quite a lot.
Tesco can be good for organic produce, and ive got some fruit from there before. Asda I found this morning has a good selection of organic fruit and veg.
Good to know where knutsford is, but I think thats a tad too far for a primal meet-up. If your ever near me, we shall meet up!

Hi Kane, I actually work near Dartford at the moment, in Wilmington, I live in Orpington. Great to know there is someone else sort of in the vicinity!
We should keep each other posted with any new local 'finds'! I am trying to locate somewhere for raw dairy nearby but having no luck. Like I said though, tesco is good price wise for organics, especially fish and meat which can be really expensive, I wanted to shop more at farmshops and do sometimes for local produce but I worry about the pesticides :-)!!

Welcome Jordanna! I will keep everyone posted if I come across some new and worthy sources of food..hehee

Hi,
I live just North of Liverpool - while I've been reading MDA for some time now I only really just starting to "live it" seriously. Good to know there are other UK folks out there on the same journey.

Welcome hotdog! Good to know you are "living" it.
M xPosted 9 months ago # -
Hi hotdog! Keep us posted on how you are doing! I have had a bad carb day today (waay too much fruit... :( ), I IF-ed for the first time yesterday plus hiked and have been tired and craving all day today. And was having a great primal week up to now too. Oh well, tomorrow is another day!!

Hello... newbie here so be gentle!
The ideas here are really appealing so I'm trying to ease in to it - have been "grain free" for a couple of weeks and felt so much better until the packet of pitta bread that I demolished yesterday!
I'm now on the lookout for good organic meat etc. Got a few bits from Sainsburys but would prefer a nice local farm shop!
Has anyone tried ordering meat online at all?:)

Hi,
I'm nearest to York / Leeds at a push.
Thanks for the website! I know there's a market at Murton (sp?) but have forgotten when in the month...Posted 9 months ago # -
Hello,
I think I am the first representative from the South West. Fortunately, living in the countryside means there are plenty of farms selling 'real' eggs, I've stumbled upon one place that sells absoultely enormous chicken eggs, 90% of which seem to be double yolks. In terms of meat, a nearby butcher's sells local meat: I'm within half a mile of the farms where the chickens, lambs, pigs and cows are raised. Some people might find it a little macabre, but I have no problem leaning against a farm gate or walking through a field looking at animals that may one day be my dinner (tactfully, I just don't mention that fact to them!).
If anyone is thinking of buying meat online do give this place a try:
http://store.foodcommerce.co.uk/fordhall/
maybe not for those on a really tight budget. I first saw Fordhall Farm on a documentary 'A Farm For The Future':
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xShCEKL-mQ8&feature=PlayList&p=9975CC0E8CC2CDDE&index=0&playnext=1
(there is some hope for the future of food in this country, just don't get too depressed by the beginning!).
I found this website for those interested in 'raw dairy'
http://www.seedsofhealth.co.uk/resources/dairy/index.shtml
It's good to know that the wisdom of MDA has spread to this side of the pond, although anyone that knows these cloudy islands of ours might smile at the thought of popping out into the sun for 10 minutes per day to get your vitamin D 'fix'. My main 'Primal' recommendation for British 'Apples' would be to supplement with vitamin D: check the various posts on vitamin D at Richard Nikoley's http://www.freetheanimal.com, http://heartscanblog.blogspot.com/ of the fantastic Dr. William Davis and http://www.vitamindcouncil.org/
Unfortunately just going out into the sunshine probably isn't the answer at British latitudes except for summer days when the sun is quite strong, particularly for older (I think that means 30+!!!)or people with darker complexions. You can get 2,000-5,000 IU capsules reasonably cheaply on eBay (usually from the USA) or http://www.healthmonthly.co.uk/swanson_vitamin_d3_1?category_id=0&search_string=swanson+vitamin+dOoops! That 'introduction' got a little out of hand, but nice to meet you all, and hope that some of the above ramble helps some.
GROK ON!
ps - For decent Apple Cider Vinegar try http://www.highernature.co.uk/ShowProductFamily.aspx?ProductFamilyID=493

Great post eegah! Thanks for all the links!
M xPosted 9 months ago # -
Hi Eegah, thanks for the links. I'm jealous, I love the west country and you seem to have some great food sources that way!

Hi, I'm in London, have been following a high fat/protein low carb diet for around 18 months.
I recently found Fordhall Farm and definitely recommend them, entirely grass fed/finished organic beef with an inspiring business model, run by the young tenant farmers.
http://store.foodcommerce.co.uk/fordhall/
Plus, their prices are cheaper than the inorganic, grain fed, hormone supported beef produced by most of the farming industry and sold by all of the major supermarkets.
Unfortunately I don't know of anywhere I can get organic vegetables or free range, organic non grain fed eggs at a price within my budget. If anybody can help with UK suppliers for these that would be great.
cheers.

Anotehr vote for the Vit D supplementation - it was my first step and led on to being pointed over here...
If it helps, I got mine (5000 "units" in strength) from http://www.iherb.comAlso (if this is not allowed someone please let me know / delete it etc) you can get discounts by referring people and being referred. So if anyone is interested, add my code of "NOS737" at the checkout to get $5 off :) In the interests of openess etc, I benefit from this by getting a couple of % off my next order, depending how many people use the code.
It may not matter though as I've enough to last a good 8-10 months!OK, end of shameless plug!
As for organic veggies, there seem to be more box schemes around; try Abel & Cole, or Riverford perhaps? Also I have noticed that urban farmers markets tend to have little price hikes compared to the same suppliers attending markets further afield - although this could well be to cover higher costs?
I'm not tooooo worried about eggs - my logic being that free range birds will at least be able to munch on bugs, plants etc. However if this is wishful thinking please let me know!
One last thing - I have a contact who works in land management and culls rabbits. Its a job that needs doing; and I have been offered free, wild meat. Just a thought if anyone knows any farmers / hunters / rural pest control folk :)

Also, has anyone here ordered the book? I was trying to work out if it would get hammered for Customs charges (and P.O. charges on top!)?
