    Looking for convincing anti-statin info

    Primal Fuel
My mother-in-law takes Crestor (a statin), and I would like to send her some information on why this may not be the best choice for her. I have read that statins don't benefit women at all, and only benefit one age group of men who have already had a heart attack (IIRC). Since the short- and long-term side effects are are so significant, I would like to see her get off the statin.

Some background: my MIL is 70 and generally very healthy. She lost about 30 pounds following CW and is now just slightly overweight. One of her carotid arteries is substantially blocked, which is one of the main reasons she went on a statin. My father-in-law is a retired MD (an OB-GYN, so cardiovascular is out of his field), so the info they would need has to be from a scientific background. I can't send them to Richard Nikoley, for instance; they need to hear it from the mouth of someone more conservative and medically-based. I have had a cautious conversation with them about how cholesterol is not the evil it is made out to be, and they were open to hearing about it, but at the moment they believe that high cholesterol is dangerous and must be reduced, and CW and drugs (if necessary) are the ways to do it. They currently eat a whole-food CW type of diet with very little "junk food", lots of grains, and low fat.

Any suggestions on resources to send them?

Google Heart Scan Blog. It's written by a cardiologist with a paleo slant. He talks about statins all the time and notes some specific downsides to crestor (though he will sometimes use statins if he feels he has no other choice for some genetic conditions)

Bisous has already suggested the site I was going to suggest. Here are all the posts on statins:

    http://heartscanblog.blogspot.com/search/label/Statins

    And from Dr.Eades' blog:

    http://www.proteinpower.com/drmike/category/statins/

The Great Cholesterol Con by Dr.Malcolm Kendrick is another resource. I haven't read it myself but it's a book that Dr.Eades has reviewed and recommended and is written by a physician, so your in-laws might be more receptive to reading it.

    THINCS:

    Uffe Ravnskov is another sceptic:

Chris Masterjohn's site on cholesterol and its benefits:

All the best to your m-i-l Annika. I convinced my mom to stop taking statins but that fact is being hidden from my brother-in-law who is a cardiologist. If he knows, he definitely wouldn't approve of it and would make her take them again.

Stephan's analysis of the Lyon Diet Heart Trial is particularly relevant. Remember, while cholesterol clearly isn't the full story and SFAs are much maligned there must be factors that do cause CVD. Stephan has some very convincing thoughts on these, with analyses of scientific publications. A few for starters:

Thanks for all the leads, guys. I am familiar with many of the sources, but the reminders were good to have. I guess I could still use some help finding a reputable resource that has it all in one nice neat package. Many of the blog posts assume (correctly) that the reader already has some background knowledge about cholesterol and saturated fat not being bad. My in-laws need more of an introduction. I'm hesitant to send a list of lots of blog posts, but this one seems quite good: http://wholehealthsource.blogspot.co...iet-heart.html.

As always, I'm waiting impatiently for Gary Taubes to hurry up already with his next book, GCBC for Dummies!

Something more 'general' about statin evil side effects.

The videos at the link are an excellent synopsis of the whole issue of statins.
