chaim77's primal journal
Hey all. I've been a lurker for a few years and have been on and off for several years, but for the last 60 days or so I've been focused and consistent on PB lifestyle.
I started out this 60 day period back in October at around 200 and 5'11. I don't know my exact BF% but I estimated it was around 20%. I got an Ozeri BF scale about a month ago and have started seeing my BF creep down to around 16 and my weight come down to around 185.
I don't really have a final weight goal, but I definitely have lifestyle goals. Here are my goals:
-Stay healthy (avoid disease and injury)
-Increase the quality of my mood - BE HAPPIER
-Increase mobility and energy (I have a dream to be able to run a 6 minute mile once again)
-Increase my strength (I've been lifting weights 3x per week)
Today has been an IF day since I got a little bit of a stomach bug and food isn't sounding real good right now. My plan is to break fast at dinner with some turkey and veggies.
As far as moving is concerned, I've been a little sedentary since I got my workout in this morning. I jogged a couple of miles on the treadmill and lifted. 130 on squat worksets, 140 on bench worksets and 165 on dead lift worksets. 50 pullups and 50 dips.
One thing I'm grateful for over the past several weeks is that I've really moved towards seeing this as a lifestyle and not as a short term thing to achieve some goals. It is becoming something I do and who I am.
Thanks to Mark S for spreading the word and for all the success stories on here. You all give me hope. I'm enjoying today and looking forward to tomorrow.
Just checking in on a quick update. So I IF'd until about 4pm yesterday. Dinner eating can be a little chaotic at home and definitely tends to wander out of the primal zone. We're not real big on the carbs and the SAD diet, but my beautiful wife is an excellent vegetarian cook. So last night we had pasta, veggie meatballs and tomato sauce. I know, I know - that sauce is basically sugar and the noodles don't fit on the PB. That' being said I'm shooting for 80/20. On the good note, I wanted to not snack to late into the night and was able to cut off eating around 8:00 or so. So I'm glad about that since that PM eating
Today is a rest day on the weights, but I hope to get a little 20 minute run in and get to Tae Kwon Do. I didn't get a chance to step on the scale this morning which I usually like to do.
Today's eating - going "green face". Eating green vegetables and animal protein. I packed my lunch for work and will break for lunch in about an hour. In the meantime, I'm feeling good and looking forward to just surrendering to the process.
Have a great day and grok on!
Time for a quick weekly update. It's been a good week setbacks not withstanding. Last Wednesday I was getting into my Starting Strength workout. I've been doing SS for about 2 months and was actually doing it last summer with some good consistency until I injured my knee and then let myself go.
So basically I've been adjusting my squats because my knees aren't the best. Instead of doing the full squats as Rippletoe prescribes, I'm doing 3/4 squats in which my butt just touching my bench and then popping back up. So I was backing up with the bar on my back with 135# on it and I couldn't tell how far the bench was from me so I tried to look over my right shoulder to locate the bench. Bad idea. I immediately felt a pull from my spine across the right side of my back. Pain, pain, pain. I could barely move the rest of the day and most of Thursday. But thursday I was able to test for my Tae Kwon Do advancement and am now sporting a brown belt!
So I didn't lift until yesterday and ate pretty bad. Yesterday I lifted well, but man am I sore today. Thankfully the back pain is gone and I can function. Also I've been eating solid the last 3 days with no exceptions. Yesterday I noticed my exczema was coming back a little after just 3 high carb days. As a foot note, I developed exczema in the summer of 2009 and have medicated it with steroids creams - it has never gone away until I started eating primal and then it cleared up. Just imagine big chunks of dead skin coming off my toes and you the picture. So that fact that it's coming back has got my attention. I expect that it will start clearing up though as I keep my carbs low.
A challenge I have right now is fruit. I'm eating too much of it. That's better than eating candy and cereal, but to get around this I need to start chopping up veggies. My best friend in regards to this is cauliflower and buffalo wing sauce. It's the best!
185.8 this am - goal weight range is between 175 to 180 - but basically I'm most interested in health and mobility. Thankfully these are on a good trajectory.
Overall the back injury was a good in that I was able to demonstrate some resilience. Too many times, I've gotten a little injury and then threw in the towel. So the fact that I was able to get back after getting hurt and eating bad a couple days is a real blessing. Setbacks happen - now it's time to brush myself off and keep walking down the primal path.
Grok on y'all!
Quick update. I'm loving the BA salad. I'm chowing it down with the 7oz cans of light chunk tuna from Costco. Good Starting Strength workout yesterday. I'm still tracking on the linear program but the bench press has been hard this week so I may be nearing the end of gains from a linear program there in the near future. My plan was to get up to body weight ~180 on the bench and squats and then switch over to a 6 week phase lift program.
Tonight is a Tae Kwon Do night. Looking forward to bouncing around a bit. At the beginning of our work outs we have a 2-3 minute "sit and meditate" period before we start into stretching and warmups. I remember how many times over the past year I would just feel like garbage in that 2-3 minutes - upset at my body and the lifestyle decisions I've been making. Now about 15 lbs down and after lifting and jogging for 2 months solid I can actually feel at peace with myself during that time.
I'm 5 days into a 30 day primal challenge here. I took my wife out last night and had a pint of pale ale. Too damn sweet for me. I used to be a 2 pint and a shot of makers mark on a evening out as a rule so the 1 pint is a step in the right direction. Next time I'll probably just have a couple of cans of PBR. Other than that - no exceptions on these 5 days and feeling good.
I actually got busy and IF'd until around 1:00PM today and wasn't hungry or fading at all.
Now I just need to figure out how to not sit down so much. I got my walking/treadmill desk and worked a few hours on it yesterday and today. Sometimes I have trouble focusing on something while on the T-mill. It's great for routine work, but sometimes I need to sit down to focus on something that requires higher cognitive function.
Looking at the potential for 5-6 inches of snow this weekend - looking forward to getting out on the XC skis on Sunday!
