Given Up Diet Coke: Looking for Substitute

    Primal Fuel
    Hi All,

I have recently fought through days of headaches to finally give up diet coke. 5 days sober so far and the headaches are abating!

What is a good alternative to diet coke? I have been drinking Perrier, but it lacks flavor. I Love the effervescence, so that is almost a must.

Any suggestions? I want to stay away from the chemical additives that are found in typical sodas, e.g., aspartame, phenolphthalein, fake surgars etc...

In my opinion, it should not be substituted, only eliminated.

You could try kombucha for something healthful and effervescent. It's a probiotic tea.

To be honest, the thing I liked about soft drinks was the carbonation. Soda water suits me fine when I want something fizzy. I tried a diet Coke a few days ago after months without one and couldn't get past a couple of sips. Maybe add some lemon/lime juice to your soda water might help.

Just add any juice you like, from the easily squeezable fruit and berries. I would not go to boxed juice (but I am obsessed with eliminating it from my folks' diet, so I am bias).

You can also try steeping and chilling various herbs and adding them to your soda with a touch of a natural sweetener. Tarragon, basil, lemongrass, etc can all provide absolutely amazing flavors. After all coke initially came from a plant extract.

I have also seen super expensive dry powdered fruit mixes, but they are pricey.

Well done on giving up the diet coke ., I was clean for about 3 mths and then fell off the wagon (cringe). I now have about 250ml every day sometimes I forget to have any .. But my body remind me the next day.. I don't drink tea/ coffee/ other soda drinks/ juice.. Only thing left is water of which I consume at least 2L daily and as I "do" dairy I have an occasional hot cocoa with milk and cream .. I tried the soda water and lime Or bitters but just was too blah ., so I am interested in any other options too

Kombucha and water kefir are two my favorites. Pretty cheap once you learn to make your own and both have a wonder fizz. Water kefir has a little milder flavor than kombucha.

If you really have to give up drinking Diet Coke, God forbid, you could replace it with sparkling soda water with some drops of lemon juice instead...

Fresh lemon and lime are enough for me, but one option might be the flavored stevia liquid drops. They come in a variety and last forever. Also a home carbonator like Sodastream is more economical than bottled seltzer.
