    Me, myself and primal!

    Primal Fuel
    I'm 39, have 2 boys aged 4 & 6..

I started dieting as i was 96kgs in July 2011 - lost about 10kg eating low fat .. But was having loads of cravings for sweet stuff and carbs. Started low GI/south beach end of March 2012 and in April 2012, I discovered that doing low GI my sleepy feelings mid morning/ afternoon started going away. Started kettlebell classes (which I love) I started using an 8kg bell and I strained my shoulder, which agitated an old injury, went to the doctor plus various specialists over next few months and I was diagnosed with a slab 2 tear and scheduled for key hole surgery in Aug 2012.. Put my 10kg back on before surgery school, Started looking at primal in Nov 2012 .. Lost my 10kgs again .. Am mainly primal now, just eat too much and my weight is slowly creeping up again .. Have not exercised much over school holidays.

Fresh start now youngest has started school in the mornings, so now have some time for me in the mornings .. Kettlebells and circuit training in the gym hopefully maybe horse riding once a month - used to ride when I was way younger - loved it!

Hi mis-behave, I completely relate to the lose 10kg, gain 10kg cycle and that slow creeping weight gain.
Well done on getting back into the gym. Fingers crossed the old shoulder injury doesn't recur.

Yes - just finished school holidays - 6 weeks where I can't go to my morning exercise classes. I've decided to join curves gym which is a 5 min walk from my house .. The machines they use look good and at aprox 10 a week is not too bad. I had in the (months ago) past spent 20 week on exercise classes, Zumba & kettlercise.. I don't smoke or drink so my "me" money went on exercise classes .. So by my reckoning I could do the curves circuit training, plus 1 Kettlebell class a week and almost get one horse riding class a month.. Just need to convince my Hubby now..

I still need to address my eating to much.. I'm just adding a bit too many snack foods in .. Like dates with cashew butter.. Plus other dried fruits and dark chocolate.. Each day!

I've been getting headaches since last week, (kids back at school) and the dried fruit seems to help for a while to make it go away., my chiropractor seems to think my adrenals are not working how they should and gave me some adrenotone to see if it helps, I see the chiropractor again next week, which will be 2 weeks since I started taking them. Chiropractor suggested I add in a few more "good" carbs .. Basmati rice, sweet potatoes, potatoes at least once a week.. Staying away from the dried fruit and natural sweeteners ?! Not really sure what works best ..

Hmm, if you've been going low carb you could have a bit of "low carb flu" particularly if sugary dried fruit eases the headache. I can't honestly say I know much about it but I've seem a lot of people around the boards who've mentioned short term problems when they change their diets. Experiment a little and you'll soon find out what works for you.

Doc advised my headaches will have been caused by me doing to much with my shoulder recently... But has sent me for a blood test .. For loads of stuff.. Because of having low energy etc ..

Hi mis-behave, I had carb flu for roughly 5 days. You are still in this time period so it could be the case. I felt dreadful. Couldn't do a thing. Good news, out the other side and I honestly feel great. Don't fret too much about the tests.

I don't think its carb flu .. I've been mostly primal since Nov 2012.. my carb levels are not down low enough for it too effect me.. At the mo my levels are about 100-150g in the past they have been 50-100g and not had issues .. I upped my carb levels because of my headaches / I crave sweet stuff.. But being better and having dates with cashew butter, dried mangos .. Milk hot cocoa with coconut nectar sugar, odd potato/ sweet potato, Dark chocolate. Etc

I've been off bread, pasta (items made with wheat) inc gluten free stuff for a good couple of months - I feel much better without it!! I have slipped up and eaten wheat items .. It takes 4-5 days to stop feeling sleepy & yucky! I know it's just not worth it now and I have some fab recipes for pancakes/ crepes, muffins, chocolate brownies cake - both for me and kids using coconut and tapioca flours..

It's just my energy levels are low much too often and I feel irritable and depressed - and kids and OH get the worst of it .. that is what I want to change the most - my energy levels my get up and be bothered about stuff attitude! It can't be normal!! I won't accept it is normal!!

My lot here call my moods the dwarfs of menopause: angry, sleepy, grumpy, shitty, weepy, achy and forgetful.
It wouldn't be so bad if I was actually menopausal. My doc tells me this is perimenopause and all I can do is hang on for the ride and wait it out.
Hope the blood tests come back okay and the headaches ease up soon.
