Buying a 1/4 of Cattle
My buddy and I want to buy a 1/4 of Cattle and I was wondering if anyone knew what type of cubic ft was needed to keep a fully butchered 1/4 cattle? Its roughly 170 lbs Thanks
A 3.5 cft chest freezer will hold a 1/4 beef, and a 7 cft chest freezer will hold a 1/2 beef, under most circumstances.
Exceptions: you bought a GIANT Angus or Belgian Blue where a side (1/2 beef) yields over 200 pounds, or you just throw everything in instead of stacking it neatly. I've fit 180# in a 7 cft with some room to spare.
Note that uprights are less space-efficient, and you'll probably need closer to 9 cft for a 1/2 beef.
We buy a 1/4 of an angus every year. Use a 3.5 ft chest freezer. Everything fits in just fine.
I believe the rule of thumb is 35lbs per cf. We just shoehorned about 350lbs of angus into a 20cf upright with some room to spare.
