    [Vent] Vegan friend is vegan

So I have this friend. I love her dearly. She's been an ethical vegan for five years and a vegetarian for twenty. She has all the common complaints of someone who's a vegetarian/vegan: migraines, sleep disturbances, weight gain, IBS, joint pain, back problems - I could go on and on. It's obvious to me what's happening - she's going through the same stuff Lierre Keith went through being a vegetarian. I hate seeing her in this much pain.

I've kept my mouth shut, though, and this is why:

Today someone sent her a very expensive gift basket that included, among other things, foie gras (and was bound with leather - think squarish picnic basket) and she flipped out. It made her feel dirty. She hated it. She can't return it. What can she do? The world is ending because someone sent her a package with foie gras in it as a gift. The world is a horrible place if something like foie gras can exist, let alone be sent to her as a gift.

I obviously can't bring up the PB to her. But it just drives me crazy knowing that if she would start eating real food (instead of rabbit food) most, if not all, of her health problems would go away.

    Just venting, I guess.

Offer to help that poor friend out by taking the basket out of her sight...and then eat the foie gras!

Yikes, that must have been a very expensive basket...it sucks for both parties that someone was trying to send something nice and it was completely offensive to her. Would she be at all open to reading Lierre Kieth's book? Although maybe you've already mentioned it to her, in a loving way of course.

I would, but I'm in California and she's in England... not exactly doable

OMG who ever sent that must not know her at all!!!

My sil is an ethical vegan, skinny fat to the extreme (as in stick legs and arms, with a big soft 3 month pregnant looking belly) sickly, weak and tired all of the time.

It sucks because although I would love to encourage her to read Lierre Keiths book, I know it would only cause family tension. I love her too much to try to change her moral and ethical beliefs, but at the same time I feel like I am not loving her by letting her kill herself slowly and my future neices and nephews.

I have however encouraged her to eat more coconut oil and coconut milk instead of soy soy soy. I encourage her to eat legumes instead of soy and more veggies. (She always turns them down though, saying she does not really care for veggies. Sigh)

It's definitely a problem, and I haven't come up with a good solution.

Sigh. Add to the list of common complaints, "Thinks the world is ending when anything upsets her world view..."

Smile and nod (or whatever the transatlantic equivalent is). That's all you can do some days. Talk about grass-fed, ethical farming and hope she'll see the light on her own someday.

tried sending her the book? i know you must have some how u rave about that book griff. sigh. what a conundrum. i wish people understood the circle of life better. factory farming AND monocrop farming is such a terrible price for the earth to pay, for cheap inedible dangerous food.

    What's she eat? bread?

Even before I read The Vegetarian Myth I understood that there's more to life and life forms that just humans, plants and vegetables and that there's no way to go through life without killing to eat or survive, despite your choice, even vegans kill with every mouthful -- not just in terms of the animals killed in harvest, or whose habitats are destroyed, etc, but in the form of microorganism that are very much alive in just about every imaginable object, especially food -- so it's silly to consider oneself righteous and above killing.

Do vegans use any disinfectants or anything like that? do they clean their homes, themselves? they kill whenever they take a shower.

I respect their desire to want to 'end the suffering' but they need to end my suffering and stfu about me killing animals. At least I'm nice enough to eat the animals I kill.

One of my most beloved humans on Earth is having some vegetarian related issues. Everyone, everyone, everyone has asked her to start taking Fish Oil. She won't do it. We're pretty open, and I've explained where I'm coming from, and won't preach to her. She met me when I was a raw vegan, so I've got a very short soap box to preach to her from anyway.

I'm convicned that the only reason I survived raw vegansim as well as I did was due to my ETERNAL BURNING HATERED... which makes me stronger than you mere mortals.

...of course, foie gras IS pretty gross, and probably not the best "trasnistion food" out of veganism for an ethical vegan.
