    Microwave ovens

How do you guys feel about using microwave ovens to heat your food?
I never really gave it a second thought until my girlfriend's chiropractor told her about the many negative aspects of using microwaves.
Now I'm sorry that I never bought a new toaster oven when my old one bit the dust.
    Any thoughts?

And what would those negative aspects be?

I don't stand directly in front of it when it's on, that's about it.

Google the question "is using a microwave unhealthy"?
I was surprised, to say the least.

I honestly don't think they're the picture of evil that people make them out to be.

You can do a lot worse.

Yes, which brings up a whole crowd of tinfoil hat peeps. Which theory was getting your attention?

I guess the theory that microwaves cause cancer got my attention.
Also, claims that microwaving causes foods to lose their nutritional value got my attention too.
I do notice a difference in the taste of foods cooked in a microwave as opposed to cooked in an oven or on a stovetop.

When microwaves became a consumer item, my Dad explained to me how they work and told me not to stand next to it when it is running. If you stay about two feet away you are fine. BTW, your cell phone is also rated safe IF it is one inch away from your head, and you see people holding them against their heads all the time. The very least you should do is extend your pinky to touch your face and keep the phone in your hand that far away from your head. Best, use speaker or a headset.

I think the nutrition one comes under tin foil hats- no different from an equal level of energy applied from any other source.

ETA: The taste difference makes sense. There is a difference in how water is dispersed compared to using another heating method and also the temperature is very different (the net effect is you tend to eat cooler food from the microwave than you do from a stove).

Last time someone asked this question we decided it was better to use a microwave than keep your cell phone in your pocket. I guess keep the microwave away from your boys (if you have boys) and don't sweat it was the take away. Or wear your tinfoil athletic supporter.

I don't know much about the health aspects, but I find them to be just not that useful. They were good for popcorn - but I no longer eat that. They turn coffee into crap if you reheat it in one - I'd rather drink it cold.

For me, the only two things I ended up using the one I had for (and it came with the condo, I didn't buy it) were:

-pricking holes in potatoes and "baking" them quickly
    -quick ripening an unripe avocado

Anything else I ever tried in them came out tasting like cafeteria food.
