    Primal cook outs

    So we're planning a cook out for Memorial Day, burgers & dogs and such. So the sides are being planned, and everybody's suggesting the usual culprits: potato salad, macaroni salad, baked beans--nothing paleo-friendly. So what would you serve with this, and how might I season the burgers?

    No reason not to serve potato salad. Make your own mayo dressing.

    I just season burgers with salt and pepper.

    Well, I have to lose a lot of weight, and having re-read Mark Sisson on the matter, white potatoes are out. I suppose I could make it with sweet potatoes.

    I'm hoping to find something else to use as seasoning, because it's going to be the first paleo burgers--no bun--I've eaten. I want to do something special with them.

    my vote is for avocado and cumin on your burger. :-) with a healthy dollop of mayo before you eat it. Marie

    How about a greek salad (Sliced up cucumber, tomato, olives,purple onion, with balsamic and olive oil dressing and a sprinkle of feta)

    Or you could do a fruit salad.

    Sweet potatoes are good roasted on the grill too.

    With really good beef, salt and pepper is all I use to let the flavor shine through. I usually make it on the grill multiple times a week (breakfast, lunch, or dinner).

    Some of my favorite primal sides are:
    tomatoes with basil and olive oil
    olives
    guacamole as dip for crudites
    grilled veggies (zucchini, mushrooms, onions, peppers)
    pickles
    sauerkraut
    cucumber salad
    fruit salad
    kale chips

    Let us know what you finally decide upon.

    So would you mix the cumin in with the beef before cooking?

    Is usually make coleslaw (using homemade may)--it's one of my husbands favorites, and sometimes we will have fried plantain chips (from the health food store, not homemade) as a treat.

    I often bring a sweet potato salad to cookouts - it's always very popular! I also make a carrot salad that is very good. A nice platter of veggies, olives, and cheese is always popular. I've been working my way through the primal choices on this list of 101 simple salads and find that so many of them are really amazing:

    One of my favorite additions to burgers is to grind up a little bit of smoked bacon and mix it in with the meat before cooking. It is really very yummy and keeps the burgers from getting dry. Another great addition to burgers is some very, very, finely grated raw onion and little bit of cream mixed in to the meat before cooking. It makes the beef so very tender and delicious.
