Dear Mark,

You've been talking about the coconut in some blog posts, but I've never seen you commenting in detail about the health and fat loss benefits of medium chain fatty acids, and in particular lauric acid (the main fatty acid of coconut oil). I've read two good books about the subject:

Eat Fat, Lose Fat by Mary Enig and Sally Falcon
http://www.amazon.com/Eat-Fat-Lose-H.../dp/0452285666

The Coconut Oil Miracle by Bruce Fife
http://www.amazon.com/Coconut-Miracl.../dp/1583332049

I've been taking coconut oil for a week and so far I can say that it has helped me overcome a bit of a weight loss plateau. I'm thrilled by the biochemical aspects of the MCFAs of coconut oil:

- MCFAs seem to bypass the normal fat metabolism, and not only can they not be stored in our fat cells, but they also seem to boost our general metabolic rate.
- Lauric Acid is a potent anti-microbial and anti-fungal agent.

I've been thinking about how coconuts tie in with Grok ... and it occurred to me that tool using hominids may have been the first of our ancestors to have access to coconut oil - just like we seem to be the only primates who have access to bone marrow. In the tropical regions coconuts are known to have very positive effects on health and well-being, and most traditional diets of those regions are based on coconut oil (or palm oil, depending on which is available).

What are your thoughts on coconut oil ... is it that powerful, or do Mary Enig and Bruce Fife exaggerate its positive effects?
