Hi Infamous, I've been where you are as a teenager and I understand how this kind of experience can really make you frustrated.
The two best writers and teachers on self defense in the world right now are Geoff Thompson (google his 'The Fence' technique) and Mark Macyoung No Nonsense Self Defense - Reliable information for dangerous situations, who is someone that has personally taught me a massive amount. His take on the usefulness of martial arts is quite refreshing and educational.
Both of these guys will tell you that the best type of self defense is to stay in safe places. If your instincts tell you to avoid a place, then follow that instinct. A lot of people have commented that you should just avoid places where drunk and unpredictable people hang out, and they're right, but I don't expect that a 16 year old is planning to never go out to a festival or bar again - but the answer is to go to the right ones - the safer places, and with friends if possible.
