    Gagging on Hemp Protein!

    Hi Everyone,

    Does anyone have any nice recipes for hemp protein smoothies? I've just made the switch from whey protein in an attempt to eliminate dairy. But jeez this stuff is disgusting! It's like eating pureed grass,...... just disgusting!!!

    So any suggestions, recipes or alternatives would be much appreciated.

    Is it flavoured? I'm guessing not. What about using strong flavoured fruit, like bananas, dates or dark berries to mask the taste?

    Well my first attempt had banana and raspberries. In the blender it started off green and then turned muddy brown. Any fruit flavour was completely masked by the hemp. Vile! Luckily i only bought a small sample bag, so not much to get through. Might try adding dates to it though. It that doesn't work it's going on the compost heap!

    Hemp protein does have a reputation of being vile in taste.

    Can you feed it to a chicken? That's what chickens are for, to turn gross junk like hemp protein into food.

    Not sure which brand you use, but I've tried both Nutiva organic hemp protein powder and Manitoba Harvest organic dark chocolate hemp protein powder. I didn't mind the taste of either. The chocolate kind has sugar in it so you may not want it if you don't consume sugar. The Nutiva kind is unflavored and green in color. When I saw the color, I thought that it would be pretty gross, but it tasted fine to me. I just mixed it with almond milk, didn't add anything else. I don't like the grassy taste (for example, a lot of olive oils taste grassy to me, and I don't like that), but the hemp protein did not taste grassy to me.

    I ultimately decided (based on nothing) that perhaps a plant-based protein powder is inferior to protein from animal sources so switched to a whey protein powder (although I'm also trying to eliminate dairy, well, casein so whey is okay, except that when I looked at the ingredients of my protein powder, it also had milk in it--fail!)

    Anyway, my point is, maybe the problem is with the brand you're using.
