    I think you have to be a little bit careful about extrapolating results from studies on persons with celiac disease to the general population. I mean, penicillin kills some people, but that doesn't mean its bad for nonallergic people. I'm not saying gluten may not have bad effects on the population in general. Penicillin causes side effects too in nonallergic persons. But mechanisms are different. Gluten damage in nonceliac disease may be bad but different than that in celiac disease, and it doesn't help the cause to conflate different things.

    The NEJM study was not on the general population.

    True, at this point it's still somewhat of an assumption that non-celiac, non-gluten sensitive people still should avoid gluten. Guys like Robb Wolf say that everyone should avoid it, and I certainly would as with any other food that a huge chunk of the world can't digest properly, we're most likely looking at varying degrees of adaptation that still isn't perfect for everyone. But that point remains to be proven outright.
