I think those fractures are common among the elderly, but there's really not enough data to compare it to what others eat when they fall off of their bicycles at 80 years old. Also depends on the impact of the crash; the speed, other objects, etc. My grandmother tripped and shattered her shoulder when she was only 68 and it was a short tumble. She's also a 35-year cancer survivor, smoker, had brain surgery to remove a benign tumor 2 years ago, and gave birth to 6 children, but her diet is horrendous and includes things like Kool-Aid. So there's that.

I think Esselstyn, Ornish, Campbell, MacDougall and their ilk should be tied up and farted on by elephants.

But blaming Esselstyn for breaking a hip while biking is like blaming Atkins for cracking his head on an icy sidewalk: what's the diet got to do with it?

I hope this thread is a troll thread.

The only reason we should be bringing up the fact that an 80 year old man broke his pelvis in a biking accident is to wish that he get well soon and that he has a good recovery.

Bike wrecks can be VERY bad, regardless of age. It sets a good example that an 80 year old man was out there riding to begin with - hopefully he will have a good recovery.

I also hope this is a troll thread...

I hope he will too. He is a very likeable fellow. I was just wondering if that type of fracture usually occurs in non-competitive biking.

Diet has a lot to do with bone health. My mother-in-law rarely consumed dairy and all she did was trip and fall and broke her wrist. I realize that anyone can break a bone if they fall the wrong way, but I just thought 4 pelvic fractures seemed like a lot.
