    Hello!

    Primal Fuel
Hi all. I thought it was time I introduced myself, as I have been lurking for a while.

I came to Primal from having discovered in the past that a whole-foods, relatively easy-going version of Atkins (I was never into the bars and stuff!) worked well for me, both for effortless weightloss and for general health. I suffer from HMS aka EDS type 3 and have had a lot of pain and fatigue over the years, much more so since having babies. I have also had a terrible time all my life in fighting off infections. I had realised that Atkins had helped me with all of this, but struggled to sustain it (I think because my motivation was weightloss).

A couple of years ago I mentioned to a friend (who is in the US) that I had found that if I did my own-modification of Atkins (all wholefoods, unlimited veg, some fruit, dark chocolate, wine and coffee) it worked well for me and she (who had discovered Primal via Atkins too), said "It sounds like you might find MDA interesting". I have been reading on and off for a couple of years, but during that time I struggled to sustain it because:

    - I was still making it about weightloss
    - I felt guilty about spending more on my diet than on my girls' and husbands' diets (and we were a bit skint at the time)
    - I wasn't thinking long term.

Last year I had the most horrendous year health-wise. I was in a terrible vicious circle. I kept getting infections that I couldn't fight off, these made me inactive, which made my HMS pain and fatigue worse, which made it harder to fight off the infections and so on. In the whole of 2012 I had one week in March with no infection and 3 days in July. All the rest of the time I was fighting overlapping infections: colds, flu, whooping cough, sickness bugs and chicken pox. I have now had whooping cough 3 times in my life and chicken pox twice. On top of that I had HMS flare up after flare up. I also had chronic Post-nasal drip all year, and heartburn, indigestion and IBS. No sleep, loads of anxiety. And as you can imagine I was putting on weight with so little activity. In the last 3 months of 2012I had 3 sickness bugs alone, and in between discovered my gut was so badly damaged the slightest thing was making me throw up, or writhe in agony. It was after the third of these that I felt desperate and went back to a very stripped down Primal diet to try to get my guts back in order. It worked and our income had improved, so I decided to stay on Primal - this time I decided on a sort of 80-20 approach, because I wanted this to be for life. So to make it sustainable I told myself I would never deny myself something I really wanted. But I would make Primal my default. I managed this 80-20 approach even over Christmas and new year and for the first time in my life found myself feeling better at the end of the festive season than at the beginning! So I kept going.

By the end of January, I felt well enough to start the Argentine Tango lessons I had wanted to do for 10 years (and which only 2 years ago the Rheumatologist who diagnosed my EDS had told me to forget about!). My husband started with me and enjoyed it too. He then decided to join me on Primal to lose his tummy. he quickly lost his tummy but then decided to stay on it because he felt well. Since then he has found he can swim twice as far. The Primal has enabled me to manage the Tango well, something which two years ago I would have believed impossible with my HMS/EDS having got so bad - a year ago my goal was to stay out of a wheel-chair. The combination of Primal and Tango has enabled me to get back into Yoga which I used to love but hadn't been able to do for about 10 years. In just 3/4 months I have had the most amazing turn around. I have now started learning to do push-ups!

The other day I spent three hours in the garden - squatting, heaving heavy bags around etc. I barely paid for it at all.

My husband is on board, my kids are slowly coming on board, and even my mum and dad are thinking about it now. One of my best friends is now contemplating it as of a chat we had this morning.

The best thing? Compared to last year, I have had two colds in 4 months, no sickness bugs, no other infections. Both of those colds I fought off in a normal time (7-10 days) like a normal person. This was previously unheard of for me. I even caught one cold off my kids, felt myself incubating it but fought it off without succumbing to symptoms!

My goal. well initially it was just to stop throwing up and writhing around in agony whenever I ate something. Then it was to reduce my pain and improve my energy levels. Then I noticed I was easily losing the weight so I decided to add getting to my ideal dress size (I don't do scales) to that. But I have got more ambitious. I have already achieved more than I would have thought possible only a year ago. So I am daring to dream. I have decided not only am I going to banish this mummy tummy once and for all, I going to get some abs that you can actually see. Then I am going to self-refer myself back to my lovely specialist HMS physio (the only HP I have seen who had faith in me and who didn't mock me when I told her that a Primal diet affected my pain levels), just for the joy of showing her my abdominals because I know she'll love that!

I sympathise. Last year I spent over 15% of my salary (before taxes!) on medical expenses. Something had to change.

I took toxic foods out of my diet, and I feel 500% better.

Welcome to the forums (I'm new too!) we are on the same journey to a better self.

Thanks for the welcome. Yes I do do other forums, but I am very selective! I always lurk for a whle to make sure they are nice and friendly before I dare to raise my head above the parapet!
