Suspension Trainers - Any good?
Does anyone have one of these suspension trainers?
If so, are they any good, or just the latest gimic?

That's the most expensive one out there. You can make your own pretty cheap. Or find a cheaper brand. I have one of the cheaper brands on the market, but I've used that one. They're not a magic bullet, just another way of doing bodyweight exercises with a few more options than a mounted pullup bar.
I think the barbell is the best tool for achieving the most common fitness goals.
I have one. I took a class at the Y for a couple of years before I decided I wanted one of my own. I enjoyed the class thoroughly, and it was tough. Some of the guys who came into it, were huffing and puffing and struggling with some of the exercises and admitted it was more difficult than it looked. I bought my TRX Pro Pack basic from Amazon for $164.95 last April - it's 199.95 there now. If you shop around, you can find them for less than what the TRX website is selling them for.
I don't think they are the latest gimmick, because they've been around for years and, if anything, the classes are becoming more popular.
I've noticed that the TRX is pretty expensive so I would definitely shop around. I know what you are saying RichMahogany about the barbell, but the Suspension trainer is easier to put away when not being used. Worth considering when space is limited I guess. I'm quite keen to give one a trial though. They are supposed to be really good for core strengthening which is what I need right now.
Anyone else have an opinion?

If you want something that's cheap and doesn't take up a room in your home, I'd go sandbag over suspension trainer every time. Mine's just an old military duffel bag with 4 x 25 lbs (11 kilos) of sand double-bagged in some sturdy contractor cleanup bags with lots of electrical tape. Well, I think my core is always lacking. I have suffered from severe back pain in the past and although I try to keep my core muscles strong, I have no defined abs. they may be there somewhere under that last layer of belly fat though. I read an article about how amazing the TRX was at strengthening this area.
Your sandbag idea sounds good. I have a 16kg (35lb) kettlebell which I swing around regularly. Think I might try and make up a sandbag though for that extra bit of weight. Still think I'll look out for a cheap suspension trainer though. just hope it doesn't rip the door frame out when I use it!
I have a TRX, and a homemade one that I made, and I still wish I had rings for some stuff. The suspension trainer handles twist around the straps, and make muscle-ups impossible for me.
