See, I get the sort-of-opposite thing happening... no one sees the amount of fats and proteins on my plate. Everyone sees the fact that I'm not eating bread (instead of burritos, wraps, pizzas etc I order the fillings in a "bowl") or ordering fries at the bar/cafe. So I've been called weird, asked why I'm avoiding carbs (cos everyone knows you need carbs, right?) and basically been told I'm not "normal".
There's such a big demographic between the US and Australia I think, and even within the two countries, depending on social dynamics/cultures.
Maybe your wife could have said that to her.
Disclaimer: I eat 'meat and vegetables' ala Primal, although I don't agree with the carb curve. I like Perfect Health Diet and WAPF Lactofermentation a lot.
