Mayor: Let's trash what's left of the countryside

As reported in ther [-]Times[/I] today the Mayor of London (aan intolerable philistine, as well as one of these creepy characters that seems to proposition every woman who crosses his path, and never mind the effect on the "little wife") Mr. "Boris" Johnson has announced that we should embrace ruthlessness in a building spree of high-speed rail lines, runways & power stations.

"Spree" mind you! It sounds like a dipsomanic Glaswegian staggering down Sauchiehall Street on a multi-day bender.

Politicians: they just have absolutely no conception of the value of the natural world. The British prime-minister has just been spouting nonsense about an "aspiration nation". One supposes that "aspiration" is what earlier ages would have called avarice.

Compare Thomas Traherne on the things these people would "ruthlessly" mar insofar as they could in pursuit of wealth and power:

You never enjoy the world aright, till the Sea itself floweth in your veins, till you are clothed with the heavens, and crowned with the stars: and perceive yourself to be the sole heir of the whole world, and more than so, because men are in it who are every one sole heirs as well as you. Till you can sing and rejoice and delight in
God, as misers do in gold, and Kings in sceptres, you never enjoy the world.
They won't stop till they've grubbed up and concreted over every piece of ancient woodland and poisoned every stream.

Not just Boris though, is it. The government (think it was this one) gave the go ahead for a massive wind farm in the highlands despite protests about the effect on the environment. Now we are hearing about how wind farm power is not that useful or economical to obtain.

A classic Boris is the proposed airport in the Thames estuary - the guys a pillock. We have four main airports serving London and another in Southend. How many more!!! High speed trains! Don't really need them as there are plenty of fast trains already across the country. This is all about 'the old boys network' and keeping big corporations sweet.

Don't we all just despise politicians.
