I don't know what you should do. All I can do is share what works for me, and that's being primal but also counting calories. I don't eat half of my calories in fat. I eat real food. I don't eat any butter at all - my fat of choice is coconut oil. I do keep the fat down so I can eat more of my calories as food...stuff I can chew and taste. Eating primal and counting calories is what works for me. I hope you can find what works for you. Good luck!

I use butter in my cooking, yes, instead of vegetable oils. But I don't eat butter on its own as a meal or snack, if that's what you're inquiring about.

Nothing is wrong with a little butter for cooking or veggies, just don't go crazy with it, you know? I use about 1 stick of kerrygold in a week, for myself, and I homecook all 3 meals I eat in a day with maybe 1-2 eaten out with friends. I can't imagine eating a stick of butter on it's own for any reason, or putting it in a drink as some do, but for cooking it is my faaaavorite, along with olive oil.

My long rambling point being, measure it precisely if you want to track it, and eat reasonable portions.

I hear that the last few pounds on a reasonably fit person can be the hardest to lose. I can't say if butter will be detrimental to that effort, or not. I don't think so, if eaten sensibly. To really answer this question it might be helpful to know what the rest of your food intake looks like.

you're right to be concerned with the calories if weightloss is a goal. you'll have to see how it goes... i would generally advise people to use fats as a cooking tool, not a meal component. you cook with butter, you don't add on everything because saturated fat is so groovy.
"dean ornish and dr. davis think the palmitic acid our bodies use for fuel while we sleep is poison if we eat it. zero-carbers like charles washington think the oldest fuel in our evolutionary history – glucose - used by organisms a billion years ago and without which the brains of modern mammals cannot survive for more than a few minutes – is an unnatural toxin if you eat it. both views ignore basic facts of medical physiology and defy evolutionary history." - kurt harris

What he said! Butter is fantastic as a condiment or cooking tool, but not as a major food group, IMO. I'd rather eat another apple or piece of cheese than extra butter.

It is important to make sure you get enough protein. After that you can distribute your energy calories between fat and carbohydrates to see what works best for you.

There is nothing wrong with butter for fat loss. Make sure you are using pastured/grass fed butter for higher CLA and nutrients. Calories can be important for fat loss, but many people report that excessive carbs stall weight loss more than "excessive" fat. In other words, try more butter (and coconut oil, fatty meat, etc), less sweet potatoes and rice.

Even when i was doing full keto, i was trying to kinda watch my fat intake. Don't skimp on butter when cooking or over your vegetables, but no reason to smother your food with it either. 1/3 Tb. Sp goes a long way.

Butter is food and high in vitamins and CLA. I hate when people try to claim that butter is somehow not "food."
