I'm going to blame this on socialized medicine

I am young, healthy person who has never been to the hospital, doesn't plan on having kids, and is well-educated. In other words, odds are, I will be a very minor consumer of health care. If I could ban everyone from drinking soda, smoking, using vegetable oils, eating fake processed food, etc., I would because it's the only way to make the amount I pay for health care the least bit fair. Of course, it would be more fair for me to just pay for the health care I use, but that hasn't been a real option for decades. Once you spread costs around and create moral hazard, you have to interfere with personal freedom to fix the distortion.

Of course, I don't trust the government to ever figure out good diet advice, so I'd prefer for them to just stay out of it.

I find it ironic that a lot of the same people who are for Obamacare because "everyone has a right to healthcare and to have their bodies treated for equally" are the same ones that are all for telling people that they can't eat McDonald's, drink a 64oz big gulp or demolish a pizza. These are the same people that do not understand that, by definition, when you give the government the ability and the "right" to provide your healthcare, you're relinquishing the right to dictate what happens to your body.

Now the government will decide what procedures you can have and what pills you can swallow. They'll also decide when you have to go home from the hospital and which surgeries are worth paying for. Don't like it? Tough, because they're the ones paying the bill. But it's all cool brah's, it's "Free" now.

I think the 64oz thing is hamfisted. But I don't have a problem with the government dealing with corporate poisoning.

Rand Paul's drone filibuster is fantastic. Imagining jackboots from a soda pop restrictions is silly.

I'm not sure what you're getting at, but I guess it depends on how offended the non-smoker gets over cigarette smoke. I don't smoke, but I don't get my panties in a bunch when I go to a bar that allows smoking, because I'm going there of my own volition and I know what I'm getting into. That doesn't mean it's cool to smoke on the subway or in the grocery store.

You're right, I should have put a finer point on it. I was trying to get across that the most effective way to get retailers, eating establishments, etc., to change is to simply not support them.

Sometimes I'll read reviews in yelp when I'm looking for a new place to try. Invariably I'll read something like, "The music was awesome, the cocktails were great, but it was so smoky!" Well, this not your northern PC, birkenstock wearing city. And actually, when I read the little freebie entertainment paper, I've noticed that a good one third to one half of drinking establishments have a no smoking policy. All without passing any laws.
