Does tithing at church count? I'm a volunteer teaching sunday school there as well. And I donate plasma every 6 weeks. And we have a sponsored child. We homeschool. Our family is kind of a 'backstop' for a university student student who sometimes needs to move 'home' for a few weeks every so often during the year, even though her parents are in the North Island....

It's the policy of giving 10% of your income to your church. "Tithe" is the old English word for tenth.

I listen to people And I genuinely care.

I also don't reserve that "special smile" for one person - I give it to the bus driver, the fruit & veg dude, strangers on the street. It's amazing how much a real smile can touch people.

In general I try not to be a douche and to treat everyone with respect.

Small gestures, but I believe the little things make up life.

Kudos to everyone else - this is a sweet thread

I like to give back, as the spirit moves me, by doing good things randomly rather than focused on one effort I can point to, and I'm trying to raise my sons to do the same. Some of the things I do include:

    - I spend time at the local library working toward adult literacy
    - I donate, recycle or freecycle used items rather than throwing them out
    - I give money to the arts
    - Like canio6, I used to donate blood until I got bounced for too much time in the UK (mad cow).
    - I been known to march on Washington, to protest gun violence

I feed cats in the neighborhood, and abuse people that are mean to them.
"Ah, those endless forests, and their horror-haunted gloom! For what eternities have I wandered through them, a timid, hunted creature, starting at the least sound, frightened of my own shadow, keyed-up, ever alert and vigilant, ready on the instant to dash away in mad flight for my life. For I was the prey of all manner of fierce life that dwelt in the forest, and it was in ecstasies of fear that I fled before the hunting monsters."

Which should not be confused with feeding people in the neighborhood and abusing the cats that are mean to them....
