Cholesterol Crystals ?
Anyone ever heard of cholesterol crystals? Supposedly they are the starting point for atherosclerosis in the large arteries. Could these be associated with the small LDL particles?
I skimmed through the paper that article is based on. It sounds like the crystals are made of "minimally-modified LDL" in the body, which is a form of oxidized LDL. (I'm not sure they come out and say that, but injecting pre-crystallized cholesterol or injecting minimally-modified LDL triggered the same pathways in the mice.) And there's evidence that Pattern B (small) LDL particles are more easily oxidized, so in that case you'd be right.
