    Sushi? Sashimi? Steak? Gastropub???

    Primal Fuel
Tonight I am going to the nicest sushi restaurant in town( here, to be exact: Kiku Japanese Restaurant | Menu ). They make their own soy sauce, and the fish is sooooo good -- a near religious experience. My boyfriend and I always get the same things to share: a tuna maki roll, a salmon maki roll, 2 pieces of hamachi sushi, 2 pieces of maguro sushi, and occassionally something we just wanna try out. If I'm really hungry I'll order some pieces of sashimi, and a seaweed salad for an appetizer.

Now, my question is, is the rice in the sushi going to add up to a lot of carbs? I also heard that sushi rice is glutenous... So will it make my stomach upset? Should I just forgo the sushi and get all sashimi instead? That'd be really expensive to get full on, I'd think.

Also, this is our Valentine's day dinner, since we wanted to avoid the hype of going out on actual valentine's day, and I'm not really all that into it anyway.

Oh! Aaaaannnnnd, he also said that we can go out to a steakhouse instead (here: https://www.thecapitalgrille.com/pag...r.aspx?id=8031 ) OR to this gastropub place we've been wanting to test out: http://meatandpotatoespgh.com/menus/dinner_menu.pdf )

Since he left it up to me, and I'm having trouble deciding exactly what I want, I'm hoping y'alls insight will sway me one way or another. Frankly, it all looks soooo good. haha.

Thanks for reading Happy belated Valentine's Day!

Sushi probably has about a tablespoon of rice per piece and a roll has what 1/4 cup? Maybe 1/2 a cup so it looks like at most you will have a cup of rice. Also white rice is pretty inoffensive when it comes to stomach issues. As for how many carbs, 36 perhaps 40g or so. Definitely not anything to worry about. It is Valentine's Day (for you guys). Eat it and be happy.

It depends what your definition of "a lot of carbs" is. I wouldn't worry about it at all. If you enjoy eating sushi, chances are you don't have massive blood glucose control issues, so you shouldn't worry about carbohydrate. If you're trying to lose weight, it's all caloric anyway, so as long as you're not overeating, you won't gain weight regardless of carb count. If you're typically a low carber, eating sushi might make you pack on a pound or two of water weight overnight, but that'll be gone in 48 hours. Don't be alarmed if the scale goes up - it isn't fat gain, you just added some water and glycogen to your muscles. If anything, you'll be able to run harder after this meal

Yes, glutinous rice is "sticky rice." Rice, however, does not contain gluten. All glutinous rice is is a white rice that is very high in starch so it cakes together, similar to how gluten acts in wheat flour. It's only a name, it is a completely gluten free food.

Yes rice is a lot of carbs (least it is with the way I down sushi). It should not be a gluten issue though. Its up to you if you would like to consider this a free night or a "sensible indulgence" if you will. I basically gorge myself at a sushi buffet 2-4x/month, but I'm not trying to lose weight.... actually its a bit of the opposite at this time. Sushi, steakhouse, or whatever. All sounds good, and you can definitely stay rather primal at any of them.

If you eat a lot of sushi you can end up eating a lot of carbs. It is deceptive how large the portions of rice are that they serve in many places, especially in the large specialty rolls. I end up just doing sashimi.

The "gluten" in "glutenous rice" does not mean what you think it means... it just means sticky rice.

It has nothing to do with gluten like in wheat.

I do duck and lamb at home all the time, so Sushi and Sashimi!
I love the special rolls with the cucumber wrappings and the fish inside like stained glass(tuna, salmon, and snapper)... no rice in that one. Just crisp and refreshing.

    Ohh, and mirugai... must eat!

I have sushi about once a week, I haven't noticed any deleterious effects from the little bit of rice.

Thanks everyone! I ended up going out for sushi after a hard LHT workout... I had a seaweed salad, plus 1/2 tuna maki, 1/2 salmon maki, and one of each: tuna sushi, salmon sushi, yellowtail sushi, and uni sushi. Then we ordered a boiled pear in plum compote with a leeetle bit of ice cream. So good, I could have definitely eaten more, buuuut that would have gotten pricey. :P Maybe we'll go out to the gastropub another time, and I'll ask for y'alls advice again on what to order. lol. I'm horrible at deciding things like that!

If you get a roll, make sure it's not one of the nasty horrible crunch or volcano types with an asston of tempura and mayo and sweet sauce on it. Rice in traditional sushi pieces are negligible. I'd just stick to sashimi. A good piece of hamachi or toro is heaven.
