I've been wearing Frees for about 2 years now and love them. Biomechanically they are good for my particular structure, although I have just ordered some VFF.
Try wrestling shoes. A little more padding than VFFs, at a lower price. Only problem is that they have a rather narrow toebox, but that shouldn't be too terrible for short CF workouts. I occasionally wear them for weight lifting (if the people at the gym yell at me for going barefoot) or biking with no problems.
