    What to use in recipes instead of Nightshades ?

    Hey guys,

    I am trying to avoid nightshades in my diet and was wandering if you have any suggestions what to use instead of tomatoes and peppers in primal recipes ?

    I get all of my recipes from Primal Blueprint Cookbook. If you are familiar with it. I want to use something else instead of nightshades in following recipes: Primal Pot Roast (Paprika), Transylvanian Stockpot (Paprika, Tomatoes), Coconut Curry (Green Chili, Cayenne pepper), Chicken Soup with Coconut Milk (Curry paste, Red pepper flakes), Maroccan Chicken (Paprika, Tomatoes). I can go in more detail if you want and I appreciate very much your help in this matter

    Courgettes, Mushrooms and Carrots are decent alternatives.
    Disclaimer: I eat 'meat and vegetables' ala Primal, although I don't agree with the carb curve. I like Perfect Health Diet and WAPF Lactofermentation a lot.

    My former sister-in-law, who is allergic to tomatoes, used tamarind in place of tomatoes.

    Pineapples and mangos are good alternatives to tomatoes in sauces and salads. Zucchini or bok-choy can stand in for peppers in some applications.

    I've successfully used strawberries in place of tomatoes in pasta sauces. also as faux-tomatoes in BLTs.

    apples work pretty good to for tomatoes.

    Pepper instead of paprika. Or perhaps turmeric? Is that a nightshade?

    Where paprika,'peppers' or chilli is used, you can try increasing the amount of pepper to add 'bite'. The Thais use a lot of white pepper and it can give a real kick. The spice pepper (as in peppercorns, the stuff in your pepper shaker) is not a nightshade. You can make your own curry pastes to get ones without chilli. Oodles of ginger, galangal, turmeric, and garlic will make it full of flavour without going close to the nightshade family.

    Mustard can also give a spicy hit.

    Some of those recipes you list are going to be quite different without the base of tomatoes and chilli, so you might be happier with the outcome by simply choosing a different dish.
