Rabies is still present in many reservoir species in this country and I would suspect more rabies outbreaks in dogs if vaccines were that ineffective. Countries where rabies vaccines are not used have frequent rabies outbreaks in dog population. Plus, from an immunologic standpoint - nothing would really be effective for only 1 day - not much in your immune system works that way.
