Some people have ethical/moral objections to the way the pigs are treated. Others worry about the susceptibility of pork to huge variation in PUFA vs. SFA content as a result of their diet. Does that answer your question? Why so grouchy?
I recently bought a pack of bacon from applegate farms uncured or whatever and it was alright but the flavor was a bit like crunchy gravel. And the price? holy shit.
walmarts bacon is delicious. Why are people so against it? And don't say nitrates because we've all been done that road. And not everyone has a the shining beacons of the new age in whole foods and TJ's with which to waste money on the same shit you can get everywhere else for cheaper.

Walmart started carrying Hormel uncured natural bacon by me at $4 a pack. Maybe keep an eye out for it?

I tend to buy mine at the local butcher, its a little bit less than the Wright's brand that walmart caries and is much better

I sympathize with you Jamie. It's damn expensive for the little amount that you get.
Do you have a local butcher shop? You could try getting side-pork from there, if they stock it. It's uncured bacon. When we take in a hog for butcher (twice a year), I order side-pork instead of bacon. It's sliced the same. I sprinkle smoked sea salt on it when I cook/fry it and my family likes it just the same, if not better.
It might be a more affordable option.

It is indeed expensive and we often buy bulk packs at big box stores. I also keep an eye out for manager's specials at the local supermarket.
A few weeks back there was a blow out on 1.5 pound packs of thick cut for $2.50 each or about $1.67 per pound. They use buy dates were a couple of weeks away..bought 5 and tossed 4 in the freezer.
