    Toddler Friendly Primal Snacks

    Primal Fuel
    So I'm new to the primal lifestyle, and I'm struggling to get my 4 year old to try anything that's not goldfish crackers or cheerios for snacks. He's pretty good at eating fruit and eggs, and the only veggie he will eat right now is spinach. So does anyone have some proven kid-friendly recipes for snacks ("diaper bag friendly") and meals that are toddler approved? I have tried some recipes from the Wheat Belly Cookbook and from the Primal Quick and Easy Meals, but he looks at it and says the standard "i don't like that". And he has gone to bed hungry before, so I'm not a total pushover. Any help would be appreciated! Thanks

    Larabars would be good for diaper bag, as well as homemade trail mix. This is kinda terrible, but my 4yo LOVES the cheddar filled lil smokies (consider them part of her 20% lol)
    Also Greek yogurt.

    He doesn't have to like it. He just has to eat it. And if he's truly hungry he will.

    With all the snacking kids are programmed to do these days it's no wonder they're never hungry enough to eat less appealing (aka - real) foods.

    Meatballs with veggies in them always go over well.
    My kid has developed a real love for olives now, demands them.

    My 4yo (almost 5) has been Primal with me for over a year, so she's come around a lot. Here's a list of what I keep around for snacks and her breakfast/lunch boxes for pre-K:

    Mini Larabars are expensive but reliably eaten.
    Baby carrots
    Mini sweet peppers (tri color, she doesn't like green)
    Cucumbers, especially the small Persian ones with the thin skin
    Not exactly Primal, but we buy Crunchmaster GF crackers occasionally.
    String cheese or Babybel cheese
    Rolled up lunch meat (Applegate or Hormel Natural Choice)
    Primal mini-muffins - my fave recipe right now is this one: Paleo Morning Glory Muffins It's so versatile, I've used leftover mashed sweet potatoes and canned pumpkin (I'd imagine ripe banana would work too), and the nuts/raisins can be subbed too--I've done craisins and chocolate chips.
    Mini primal pancakes
    Yogurt tubes are great (I buy Stonyfield YoKids) b/c you can freeze them and they thaw over time.
    Meatballs
    Cubed chicken
    Bacon
    Chicken apple sausages
    Little Smokies (the chicken ones don't have MSG at least, still not great but she's hard to get protein into sometimes)
    Organic fruit leather/twists
    Raisins
    Sweet potato chips
    Mini salmon patties, I was really surprised how much she liked them

    Totally forgot about nuts! Mine loves almonds and pistachios.

    I'm making her chicken nuggets (ground in food processor) with a crushed walnut crust as I type. I'll let you know how that goes over.

    Edit: They are a hit! She's dipping them in yoghurt and LOVES them. I think I will freeze some so I can just take a couple out for snacks/lunches.

    Almost any snack is "diaper bag friendly" if you have a small cooler and those little freezy things that go inside to keep the food cool, or a thermos for warm foods. Lots of tiny tupperware containers, or something like this: Amazon.com: LunchBots Quad Stainless Steel Food Container, Lime Green: Kitchen & Dining or Amazon.com: Dr. Sears Nibble Tray, Yellow/Green, 12 Months: Baby will help you pack, too.

    My daughter goes to a preschool that only allows vegetarian food. (However, her non-primal foods are things like sprouted lentils/mung/adzuki beans, or some other kind of bean/legume/seed, or homemade whole wheat muffins or whole wheat crackers with full fat cream cheese, so I'm okay with it.) She will eat any veggie dipped in ranch (not the homemade kind, sigh. I've been working on a homemade recipe to wean her off of Hidden Valley.) She will eat peppers, cucumbers, snow peas, broccoli, celery, and spinach raw and plain, without ranch. I've also convinced her that wrapping things in raw spinach is fun! So, I usually send grapes (cut up), blueberries, small cheese wedges, etc for her to wrap in spinach leaves. She eats tons of plain, full fat Greek yogurt with dried berries and a drizzle of honey, and loves cheese and nuts of all kinds. Sometimes I send soup in a thermos, which she likes. Oh, and she LOVES frozen veggies and fruit...it's kind of weird. Girl will throw back handfuls of frozen peas or frozen mango chunks. She doesn't like regular nut butters, but an occasional treat is Justin's chocolate almond butter, with apple slices. Something I've been meaning to try is making fruit and veggie sauce--ie apple sauce, but with added carrots, squash, kale, etc. She LOVES these: Happy Tot Organic Baby Food,Stage 4 Green Bean, Pear and Pea, 4.22-Ounce Pouches (Pack of 16): Amazon.com: Grocery & Gourmet Food. They get expensive, which is why I want to try my own.

    She used to dislike veggies (and still adamantly insists she doesn't like them even though she LOVES them!) and for awhile she lived solely on yogurt and fruit, but I told her, "You need to eat foods that make your body grow healthy and strong. You need lots of different colors of foods, like a rainbow. What color of the rainbow do you want to eat today? We have green spinach, red peppers, and yellow squash!" After this, I started asking her at every meal, "What vegetable do you want? Which color of the rainbow do you want to eat today?" Since she takes part in the choosing, and since she knows she needs a veggie at every meal, she's pretty good about eating it. If she says "I don't like that!" I tell her she has to take one "no thank you bite." She must chew up and swallow that bite, and more often than not, she says she likes it.

    Other ideas to make healthy eating fun:
