    Melatonin for Sleep and Antioxidants

    This article was published today by the California Naturopathic Clinic:

    What is one of the most potent antioxidants known to man and medical science? The answer: melatonin. Melatonin is a hormone that is popularly known for its ability to induce sleepiness and help with sleep, but the benefits donít stop here. It has also been discovered to be one of the most powerful antioxidants in existence. And the best part about all of this is that your body naturally makes it when the conditions are favorable. Your body naturally secretes melatonin between the hours of 8 & 10 p.m. in response to darkness or dim light. This is why it is so important to get on a good sleep schedule and dim the lights of your home as it gets late. Being exposed to bright light during the time period that your body normally secretes melatonin can actually inhibit its secretion. Lights of any kind, including light from a laptop computer screen have been shown to do this. Another important note about melatonin is that it has been found to raise the level of immune cells known as natural killer cells; and natural killer cells are one of the bodyís primary defenses against cancer cells. So if you want to get better sleep, increase your antioxidant status, and decrease your risk of cancer development, then work with your body in optimizing its secretion of this invaluable hormone. Why not? Itís Free!

    Great advice! Thanks.
    Also, soaking in a hot tub or bath at night helps release melatonin;
    makes for a great night's sleep.
