It is, but the least problematic. It's basically starch. I wouldn't eat it much while losing weight, but if you're at a healthy weight and especially if you are active, it's a good fuel source assuming you are not insulin resistant.

I wouldn't say desirable unless you really need some added carbs in your diet. Personally, I can't eat much rice because if makes feel awful afterwards. The exception is if it's in small amounts like with sushi.

I'm the 'Starch King' around here, I guess, and I don't really like rice that much. I eat it maybe twice a month, usually in the form of sushi. Cold rice has some healthier properties than hot rice, but we won't go into that right now.
I have always been surprised by the acceptance of rice--a seed--in primal/paleo eating. I'm thinking it's because so many cultures past and present survived with rice at center of their diet and it's pretty well entrenched in our lives.
For carbs, I prefer potatoes, sweet potatoes, and plantains. There are a few other tropical plants with good starch/carbs, but I am not familiar with eating or cooking them (taro, cassava, tapioca, etc...)
Oh I LOVE rice! Haven't had it in sooo long. But I also love oatmeal, whole wheat bread, cream of wheat, corn on the cob, cornbread and milk... but I don't love chronic pain and weighing 200 lbs so I'll live without them.. Mark Sisson might try to pass grains off as bland fillers, but not in my world! Oh well. I do plan to get back to enjoying a bit of rice now and then.
lost my taste for rice thanks to primal. I cave occasionally to a sandwich on artisanal bread though (I'm going to Primal Hell ahhhhh! lol)

White rice is not a grain, it's a grass. We eat it about once a week. Mark says basamati rice has the lowest carb load.
I eat white rice almost everyday; so good when mixed with carrots, tomatoes or bell peppers in the process of boiling it.
I love white rice with butter and nutritional yeast + pink Himalayan salt and pepper. It's so tasty!
Rice is a grass and the grain is harvested from it for human consumption. Same thing for wheat, its a grass and the grain is harvested and used for consumption. They are both grains when humans eat them conventionally. My grandfather used to be a rice farmer in the Philippines and my mom and her brothers took over after he passed away. I actually do well with rice but not so well with wheat. But then again I never had an issue with weight and have always been active. I think if you are trying to lose weight and are not very active you should keep away from rice. But if you are a healthy weight I don't see a problem with it.

People say I am on a "crazy" diet. What is so crazy about eating veggies, fruits, seafood and organ meats? Just because I don't eat whole wheat and processed food doesn't make my diet "crazy". Maybe everyone else with a SAD are the "crazy" ones for putting that junk in their system.
