Thread: Parkour and natural movement. page

    I had never heard of Parkour until about two days ago. The next day I saw it again on a Bruce Lee documentary and then this morning I was watching a video on natural movement over at Free the Animal and one of the related videos was on natural movement.


    Talk about primal transportation and top physical health. These people travel cities not at a jog, but running, jumping, climbing, flipping, balancing and rolling and they don't stop.


    Since I'm a father now and can't risk killing myself by jumping from roof top to roof top and dropping multiple stories or doing flips, I doubt I will ever be like these guys, but I have to admit that becoming primal really does make me want to move like them.

    yeah, there's been videos on youtube/google for a few years with this type of thing. Apparently it's pretty big in eastern europe.

    I like the overall concept of it, though. Be kind of neat to be able to build a more controlled 'course' for it.


    Just searching on youtube for parkour yields a lot of videos.

    I've been fascinated by Parkour for years now, but I've never attempted it. It was founded in France by a kid that loved running around in the woods and challenging himself by using the trees that were obstacles to his advantage, but then when he moved to a city he just made the city his obstacle and worked around it.

    It is a very primal thing when you get down the the essence of it. They move at high speeds and find the shorted route from point A to point B using the least amount of space and time. I think a big difference is the Parkour people, and the Freerunning people. Although they're similar they're both different in their ways.

    @timcondradinc I watched the youtube video and stopped count after about 50 ways I would have died if I tried something like that. Those guys are just amazing. The put a lot of the Matrix moves to shame and they did it without guide wires or special effects. Maybe that guy is the real Neo. hmmm....

    yeah, I agree. Obviously, there's a lot of cutting done on that video, but some of those jumps couldn't have taken a lot of takes - not hitting them just right would mean a broken something probably. But, usually a part of learning to do that is learning how to fall, as well.


    The park I live next to has some pretty neat areas for doing different types of exercises. I've been thinking through some variations keeping more in line with primal-style exercise, but also this to some extent. While what I would be doing would be not nearly as impressive, it wouldn't be as dangerous, either (Although, that's part of the fun, I suppose). Some of it I can do on actual stairs and stuff that few people probably know about, and for some stuff I'm trying to think about how to build some easily collapsible barriers to jump over and stuff. Then again, maybe not.

    There's one part in the first video where he is hopping up two stairs at a time on one leg.....SO F'N HARD.

    Those were awesome. I'm going to slowly start adding some of those exercises into my life. I have a long way to go, until I can hall myself up a rope on upper body strength alone.

    generally, those are some great exercises for a workout. I need to watch them again at home and take notes and try to remember to do them.


    Yesterday I was reading something about getting to the point of a 'basic level of strength', and the author had a number of things that he felt was a good criteria. I've gone through P90 and am about 3/4 through P90X, and most of the stuff on the list I can do, or can nearly do, which is pretty cool.


    the more annoying aspect of this is finding locations that meets the needs. Like when he's doing the jumping between the posts - obviously I won't be able to jump that far, but finding something that's 'just right' is kind of difficult to do. I was at the Nike store awhile ago, and they had these rings for that kind of thing - not exactly the same, but something more adjustable.

    What about just getting a couple of larger, stable rocks? they don't need to be tall. Just tall enough that you have to balance on them when you land. You could get double use out of them. You can lift them and you can jump on them/\.
