    The obesity asylum

A thought experiment! Let’s say we took one hundred morbidly obese persons, in the 400 lbs. + category and put them in a closed camp or asylum and let them do a modified fast of around 5 -700 calories per day for one whole year. No obligatory physical activities. Outside the camp we put armed guards to control that no illegal food will be smuggled into the camp! What would the output be after one year? how many would lose their weight, stop using their medications etc., or even get serious ill, eventually die due to complications of too little food? We know that at least one obese person has completed a water fast for one whole year, so why should not a very fat person survive one year on let’s say 3 daily cans of tuna in water, all the raw fibrous green vegetables he could eat, one cube of chicken broth, one multivitamin pill and a tablespoon of fish-oil and plenty of water, coffee and tea? After all, morbidly obese people carry so much food with them stored in their own bodyfat right?

and after their year of forced fasting, roughly 2/3 would go wild and eat til they were sick then hoard food and gain all the weight back

You would scar them mentally for life. It's been done before, just not with fat people.

I just went to that link. I agreed before I read some of this, though. I have heard serious researchers recount stories from the aftermath of WWII, and the (Allied) psychologists had their hands more than full trying to emotionally/psychologically aid the victims of semi-starvation/near-fatal-starvation states, and it surprised them that this psychological support was just as important as the improved nutrition.

I have had a small bit to do with social workers who work for adoption agencies specializing in foster care/state/very-hard-to-place adoptions, and the behaviors and food issues of these kids (especially those who suffered neglect) is huge.

I know that you aren't doing this thought experiment with a stated thought-purpose of abusing obese persons, but that is what you are going to get (psychological scars), even if you do provide nutritional support along with a very-low-calorie diet. I think you are going to get this even if the obese folks are fully aware beforehand of what awaits them.

I am with Dr. bork bork - keep this idea and work on the novel!

And the good thing by being fat in this context, I suppose, is that the very obese person can go for a much longer time before starvation, so I don't think those experiments are comparable…

uhm... WOW... i have come to realize and accept that my parents ( mom specifically ) kept me in near starvation, but i never realized how much of my symptoms come from just that alone ignoring all the physical abuse

I suppose the black marked price of salami would surpass the price of gold inside the camp!!

Wow, you might have a winning reality show concept there, since people must be getting inured to the level of abuse on the Biggest Loser by now. Nothing like showing those fatties who's boss by rounding them up in prison camps and forcing them to starve into thinness at gunpoint.
