Exclamation Is this too much saturated fat?!

    Primal Fuel
We all know sat fat is good, but whilst we have a guideline to how many carbs are optimal, we have no indication of the upper boundaries of fats?!

Basically today I got carried away at breakfast and ate about 100g of saturated fat content from creamed coconut, as well as my eggs etc.

Surely not ideal? Whats the daily target?

The target is 70-80% of your caloric intake from fats, and approximately half of that in saturated fats.
Primal eating in a nutshell: If you are hungry, eat Primal food until you are satisfied (not stuffed). Then stop. Wait until you're hungry again. Repeat.

So how much of what other fats should you be eating?

Avoid polyunsats like the plague (vegetable oils and margarine). Stick to saturated and monounsaturated fats.

I agree with Griff on the details.

Luckily, for most people eating to satiety on real, unprocessed foods -- with an eye on keeping carbs relatively low and fat high -- it'll all come out in the wash. No need to sweat those details unless you're trying to deal with particular disease states or deficiencies.

Well. There are some deficiencies MOST of us have -- O-3 and magnesium come to mind -- so supplementation bears consideration.

But, by and large, just eat good food until you're satisfied, and you'll be fine.

Coconut is a medium-chain tryglercide and should be treated differently than the long-chain ones, as it gets absorbed in the stomach. It does some neat stuff that palmitic and stearic acid don't do but it also it doesn't take their place so make sure to get plenty from animal sources.

I would also say shoot for 50% of fats being saturated and then no more than 10% of fats PUFA, non oxidized in a 1:1 omega 3:6 ratio. Less PUFA are probably better.

Here's a link to an article by Mary Enig where she asserts that 50% of fats should be saturated for optimal bone health http://www.communicationagents.com/c...rated_fats.htm
