When we go backpacking (and we is anybody I've ever been backpacking with) you can tell people are getting hungry when the conversation turns to food. The longer the conversation stays on the subject of food and the more elaborate the food fantasies are, the hungrier we are. For some reason the actual hiking sort of blunts the feeling of hunger, but the conversation gives it away.
In regular life I feel hungry deep in my stomach and there's a feeling that I could eat a horse.
