If not even less. On sedentary days I'd suggest 20 grams of carbs as a max. On days were you get out for a good walk, 20-30 grams. If you're serious about ketosis adapting, then don't worry about upping carbs on a workout day much beyond 30. You probably could do that and be ok, but it might then take you a little longer to keto-adapt.

By the way, how are you with fasting? If you want to, fasting can help speed up the adaptation time. You could do the one meal a day thing, or even better, start in on a two-three days fast and then get into your ketogenic eating pattern. Just another option to speed things along!

I've gotten to the point of being ok with 16/8 fasting. I do fairly well with that now, but I haven't tried fasting beyond that for a long time. Fasting used to contribute to really bad binges for me, but I think that was mostly due to the fact that I was nursing at the time. Now I can get to 1pm fairly easily without eating, and I also do many of my morning workouts fasted.

Fasting is not required here, just another option to consider. It will speed adaptation time if done correctly though. You could try the one meal a day plan if you're brave?

But don't push it if you think you're not ready. Macros are what are largely important on a keto eating plan. Oh, and keep calories at a reasonable level too. You can still gain even when in ketosis.

Well, maybe once I get comfortable with eating such a small amount of carbs, I can try a day of eating just once. It scares me a bit to be honest, lol!!! I don't want to freak out and start eating everything in sight because I pushed too far and went too long without eating. I'll probably track calories for a week or so just to make sure macros and calories are in order. Thanks for all the advice, I appreciate it!

I completely understand. Though, you could theoretically try it just for one day and see how you fare. If you do well, great! If not, no big deal, you lost one day and can begin anew the next day without trying it again.

That is true as well. Here's another question. Can I still drink coffee and tea? Will that knock me out of ketosis? There's this certain tea I drink, it's called Good Earth Spicy and Sweet, and it's delicious but also has a slight sweetness naturally to it. There isn't any calorie or nutrition info on the box, so can I assume it's no carb and ok to drink?

Some folks say that because caffeine can enhance the insulin effect it's not a good idea on a ketogenic diet.

However, my personal n=1 was that it had little or no effect on the mechanism of ketosis. My thinking on the matter was that as long as I was eating such a low level of carbs my insulin response was low enough to begin with that any "enhanced" reaction observed from caffeine wasn't enough to matter. So I say it's probably fine.

I advise you to learn to drink your tea straight and your coffee black though, for obvious reasons.

As for natural carb content in teas, it's mostly fiber anyway which you don't count against your carb numbers. Exceptions to that are going to be matcha tea (because you consume the whole leaf) and genmaicha (it has roasted rice which can leach a carb or two) so these particular teas might not be advised on the diet. Otherwise, don't stress it.

why not with cream, coconut oil, or butter? Doesn't fat help with the keto process?

Yes, but it also adds to your caloric intake totals. Ketosis has been shown to be most effective in moderately reduced caloric environments. I would advise, at least while transitioning, not to add any other variables.

Besides, I never understood you guys and your obsession with bulletproofing beverages. Oh sure, I get the concept, but... Let's not treat it next to godliness. That is reserved for bacon.
