    Considering Paleo

Hi all! I heard of the Paleo diet awhile back, but never really gave it much thought until very recently. I'm 55 years old, have diabetes, high cholesterol and hypertension. I'm on prescribed medications for all of those diseases unfortunately. I would be happy to drop about 50 pounds right now as my eating habits are atrocious and I seldom exercise. I'm a mess!!

The oxymoron in all of this is that I'm a nurse. Much of my job involves educating patients on ways they can improve their health. I have struggled with weight issues all my life and have finally reached the point where it's do or die because my health is suffering. In the past few years I tried going Vegan. While my cholesterol dropped, my blood sugars spiked sending me in to full blown diabetes, but the worst of it was that I felt awful... tired, brain fog, listless. My body seems to do better with a more low carb approach.

This past week, I did a few Google searches, hence how I found this forum. I also picked up a Paleo book for my Kindle and have started reading through it. I'm not one to just dive in without knowing all the particulars first so I do have some questions for you more advanced members...

I would love to get my cholesterol, blood sugars and blood pressure numbers down. Given my age and that I'm in menopause, weight loss has not easy for me. I'm curious to know what others out there have experienced. Particularly for women in my situation.

I'm not 100% sold on the Paleo way just yet, so I'm basically here to 'learn and explore' all I can before I take the plunge. Since lowering cholesterol, blood pressure and blood sugars are of the most importance to me, I'm curious to know how others have fared in those areas as well. What other benefits have you noticed since becoming Paleo? Would you recommend this to a female in her 50's and beyond?

I had explored Atkins, but found it to be too restrictive with regard to the consumption of vegetables and fruits. I like the fact that the Paleo way offers plenty of those lovely nutrients! It's looking promising, but I need more information still.

Can't wait to hear all about your experiences.

    Best,
    Jenny

Give it a go for 30 days and see how it goes. You can't do any damage in 30 days by just eating veggies, fruit and meat/fish/eggs that you couldn't undo easily enough by going back to the way you eat now..

And if you find that you don't like looking and feeling better, you can always go vegan
If you're interested in my (very) occasional updates on how I'm working out and what I'm eating click here.

Welcome Jenny. You found this just like I did. I stumbled on the site, read a lot, and jumped in. I will say that I finally have a respect for my body and food. Do your research and find what's best for you.

there are so many success story posts about those very things that i'd be here all night listing them

so i'll just say for myself that cutting out wheat and margarine has led to plenty of positive results. body aches went away, weight gain stopped, some hormonal issues reversed etc etc etc

try it for a month, you might like it
    beautiful
    yeah you are

Baby if you time travel back far enough you can avoid that work because the dust won't be there. You're too pretty to be working that hard.

Greetings and salivations, As a guy I dont know how much relevance this has but in april I was 360 lbs, 195/135 bp on 3 different max dose meds, had T2 Diabetes, IBS and massive arthritis. Now I am 270, 145/80 bp no longer on meds, the T2 is gone gone gone. The IBS is gone so long as I dont cheat and the pain is 100000000 x less.

On top of this my anxiety and depressive issues are all gone or at least I dont notice them.

Give it a try for 30 days, you wont regret it.

Update: 10 Days in and going strong!

Today I reached my 10th day of the Primal way of eating. I had ordered and received all of Mark's books from Amazon.com and have read through most of the books already. I'm finishing the Primal Blueprint right now and getting ready to do the 21 Day Challenge book to refine what I've already started. I also received the complete Platinum package of supplements and will start on those tomorrow. The damage control formula should do wonders as it's packed with wonderful nutrients. Tried the Primal Fuel tonight.. made a chocolate shake that was out of this world!

When I think back to the 10 days ago when I entered this forum in search of information, I was genuinely a bit skeptical and fearful of trying this, however, I was also desperate to find something that would work for me because my vegan diet pretty much did me in and my health had been suffering for months... brain fog, extreme fatigue, hair loss, weight gain, fluid retention, elevated blood sugars and hypertension, hyperlipidemia, insomnia, etc.. etc..

To my surprise, I have not experienced any side effects at all. I'm not hungry and my sugar/carb cravings are greatly diminished and under control for the first time in probably the past few years! Today as I walked past the sweets and the bread aisle at the grocery store, instead of being tempted, I felt so liberated and unaffected by it! The best change is that my brain fog and fatigue are completely gone and I'm down 7 pounds! It was so bad that I was almost walking into walls (I'm not kidding)! Today, I cleaned the whole house, ran errands, went grocery shopping, cooked a fabulous dinner and made some extra food for the next few days. It's 9:35 at night and I'm still as wide awake and energized as I was this morning! The heck of it all is that I'm just getting started with this new way of living - haven't even touched the tip of the iceberg yet with what's to come!

I don't even know who to thank... the forum members here who kindly provided support and took the time to encourage and answer questions, Mark for the wealth of information he provides to his subscribers, or his support staff who took the time to answer calls when I phoned in with questions.

This has truly been life changing and I feel as if I'm on the road to better quality of life. If anyone out there is skeptical, all I can say is just 'try it'!!

    Best,
    Jenny

    Jenny,

I too am considering going primal, and I am most interested in you as I have similar problems and similar age. Do you take medication for high cholesterol, high bp, etc?

I am having a hard time making the decision to go primal because I do have these medical issues, but I am so tired of taking medications that don't work or cause additional problems.

    Thanks,
    Angie

    Angie,

I'm so glad you posted your question here. I don't know if you saw my first post or not, but when I started this thread, I was VERY skeptical in the beginning. I had tried so many types of diets, of which none really worked. I had reached the point where I had almost given up.

In answer to your question, yes I do take medications, however, I am already down to the lowest possible dosage on all my meds due to the radical changes in my body since going Primal. I take Metformin 500mg ER for diabetes, Lisinipril 10 mg (down from 20 mg), Lipitor 10 mg (also down from 20 mg) and also Synthyroid -- of which I'll always have to take because my thyroid was thrashed years ago, but no problem there. My blood pressure "with meds" was running pre-hypertensive and my doctor was about to increase my Lisinipril from 20 to 40.... INSTEAD he lowered it as of last week and told me "I don't know what it is you're doing, but keep doing it! My blood pressure this past week has been a little on the low side, so I may be completely off that medication very soon! Before going Primal, my fasting blood sugars were around 100 to 110 in the morning. I now have them down to the 80's!! I'm hoping to be off that medication sometime soon as well. As far as cholesterol goes, I need to get another panel run, but I won't be surprised if I'm off that med as well.

All this to say, this is only the 'tip' of the iceberg of what I've experienced thus far. My skin looks fabulous, my hair is growing in a little thicker. I'm sleeping better at night and I've lost my constant cravings for carbs and sugars. I heard that some people experience a few minor side effects at first, but I can honestly say the only side effect I've experienced is increased energy and an overall feeling of well being. I'm also sleeping better at night and down two sizes as of yesterday!! It's been a phenomenal experience all the way around and I'm never going back to my Vegan diet again!! I

I've become so passionate about all the changes that have taken place that I'm putting together a blog and a support group based on Mark's books and supplements. I would love to have you join me! I would be happy to partner with you for added support if you're interested.

As I stated earlier, I was very skeptical about the whole diet, but someone on this thread suggested that I simply give it a try for 30 days and see how I felt. I'm so glad I listened!! I have since cleaned out my pantry of all the bad foods (I donated them to a food bank) and replaced everything with Paleo friendly recipes and baking. I've discovered a whole new way of cooking (and eating) that is soooo satisfying and good! Last weekend I made Paleo Banana Nut muffins, I made up a batch of Paleo Lasagna and I'm enjoy a decent breakfast of bacon and eggs every morning. Other mornings I use Marks Protein Powder and make up some delicious concoctions in the blender.

Seriously Angle, I would say RUN don't walk to your nearest Amazon.com or bookstore and pick up your copy of the Primal Blueprint book and the 21 Day Challenge. I have all of Mark's books now, but those two are my favorites. There are so many websites out there with amazing recipes that you'll never grow tired of the many options available.

Most of all, I feel so amazing and good now. I jumped in head first and I'm never looking back again!

I would say that if you do make the decision to go Primal, educate yourself as you go along. Don't wait until things are perfect in your life, just do it. If you're taking medications, be sure to work in conjunction with your doctor. Have him (or her) monitor your progress and be willing to adjust your medications accordingly. Pay attention to your body and perhaps keep a journal.

If you need support, please let me know if I can help. I would love to connect with you!

    Best of luck to you!
    Jenny
