    MSG / Glutamate

    I just discovered than the Deli meat here is sometimes packed with "Natural flavoring", which is probably MSG/Glutamate.
    But I red that you get much more naturally occurring Glutamate from food alone (proteins) than from one slice of MSG enriched prepackaged ham.

    Out of curiosity, I just tracked my calories on Paleo Track and I scored 29,741 g of Glumatic Acid.

    So, should I worry about it ?

    Ok Glutamic Acid and MSG are not exactly the same thing, MSG is the salt extracted from glutamic acid which you can't find alone in nature. BUT, some foods we eat in the Paleosphere do contain a similar form called "Free Glutamic Acid" is all aged foods, aged cheeses for example.

    So... I just looked on PaleoHacks and I tend to see two "camps" concerning this issue...

    From what I've heard, the glutamates naturally occurring in food are not something to stress about too much, though I have no resources to back that up.

    Anecdotally, my wife has bad reactions to MSG, but loves some of those cheeses with high glutamate levels, which don't bother her at all.
