    Cost of 1/4 of a grass fed cow, roughly?

    I'm trying to see whether the reduced cost of the meat justifies buying a chest freezer ( or how long it would take to break even ).
    Start Date 9.24.12
    Starting weight 285ish ( scale is acting funny so I don't trust it, but 285 is close )
    CW - 271 pounds
    First Goal - 255 by 2013
    Main Goal - To be healthy for my family... I have an awesome family.
    Other Goal - to get off some medications
    Final goal - to get to about 180 pounds by 2014
    NEW GOAL - When I can start a new journal called "Your dad is not so fat!"

    It totally depends on your source for meat and how much you're paying per pound.

    For me I can fill my freezer (7 cubic foot) with about 275 lbs of meat, at about $3/lb.

    I don't think I'll ever buy my meat any other way. When I move from NY to TN, the freezer is one of the few things going with me.

    I am not sure cost is an issue. I am in Edmonton, Canada, just bough 100 lbs or grass fed hormone free beef...awesome.
    45lbs ground, 10lbs stewing beef the other 45 lbs steaks and roasts. The freezer is full, cost was $500 and tbh I have only defrosted some ground beef and the taste is awesome. It is at least as cheap, and probably cheaper but the added taste and lack of hormones makes it a no brainer for me.

    I pay $2.75 a pound for a combination of ground meat, roasts, and steaks, from organic, grass-fed, non-hormone beef raised by a local rancher. (He gives me the bones for free!) The meat comes already packaged and ready for the freezer.

    The last small 1/2 beef we ordered was $1000. Can't remember the weight off the top of my head.

    Around here, 1/4 cow is around $4/lb, the price decreases with half and whole beef. We're also looking into getting a quarter when they process later this month. Sometimes you can snag a great deal on a freezer off of Craigslist or the classifieds. We got a Kenmore upright for $40, older model but not terrible on the energy consumption (it seals tight and doesn't cycle often) and it doesn't freezer burn things like our fridge does. Also, the more stuff in the freezer, the more efficient it is.

    Here in Saskatchewan, we pay $4.00 a pound for 1/4 beef. BUT if we did not have the $500.00, which we did not for many years, we'd be up the creek without a paddle.

    For me, an eighth of a grass-fed, antibiotic free, cruelty free cow cost 400. So a quarter would cost 800. But on the website they said they calculate it differently... after it had been dry aged... so I dunno. But I'd recommend it, the meat is EXCELLENT! The beef is so... beefy! I am glad I have my parents to split costs with though.

    Edited to add, I'm in Calgary, AB. If you're in the States or somewhere else the cost would be different of course.
