    Hello folks;

    I have a friend whose mother was just diagnosed with type 2 diabetes - blood sugars were in the 600's. Her mother is being encouraged by her physicians to eat a low fat, high refined carb diet to control her sugars. My friend has asked for some resources that discuss the benefits of a higher fat/lower refined carb diet for diabetes. She is vegetarian, but none the less, I would think anything has to be better than the white rice, low fat yogurt diet they are prescribing.

    I recall that there are a couple of diabetic resources that I've seen here - anyone have any favorites?

    Dr. Richard Bernstein, Diabetes Solution. He has a website with great information and several books.

    He is himself a Type 1 diabetic who, experimenting on himself, realized that low carb was the ONLY way of eating to control blood sugars. He was at the time an engineer, and went to medical school to get some credibility. He's been a practicing, board-certified endo for years and years, but still has no credibility in the medical establishment!

    He not only provides recommendations for eating to control blood sugar, but he explains how specific foods affect the body of a diabetic.

    Tongue-in-cheek or do you believe this is true? If the latter, what is the evidence? I guess the simple fact that CW does not embrace carb restriction as the best way to control BG? If I ate a diet suggested by this doctor I would be on insulin in no time. My body is a perfect carb detector. If I eat more than 8-10 grams of carbs, my 1 hour postprandial exceeds 140. It doesn't make any difference if the carbs come from high or low GI food, with or without a lot of fat. It is really amazing, actually.

    Diabetes is one of the biggest killers of people in today's world and this is often due to people not knowing that they have it and letting the disease go uncontrolled.
