Porn: Even less Primal than Twinkies!

    Primal Fuel
What's the most Primal thing of all? Wanting to spread your genes onto the next generation, obviously. From a strictly evolutionary standpoint, that's what it's all about.

So, what modern activity (a) causes young men to not want to have any sex, (b) stifles them emotionally and mentally such that no girls want them, either, (c) utterly pulverizes men's emotional resolve and mental focus, and (d) screws up your brain more than a breakfast of Twinkies and Coco Puffs screws up your gut, and (e) screws with crucial hormones like Dopamine.

"Modern grains!", you say? Yeah, I'm sure those do it, too. But the answer I was looking for is internet porn. (Which is "qualitatively different" than porn in an old Playboy rag - though that's bad, too - because of its greater ability to provide novelty, thus wildly exacerbating porn's native harms.)

At a different thread, wiltondeportes shared this epic TED Talk video which details how destructive porn is to the brain. I was riveted watching this....even though I've made it a point to avoid porn for several years, now. I can still remember how consuming it was, and can relate to much of what he describes, on a subjective level.

As a companion piece to that, here is a fiercely-written pair of articles, written by a female, detailing what porn does to you. You can almost feel her frustration at the thought of the men in her life rapid-clicking through internet porn (c'mon now, most all of us dudes have done that) like rats in an experiment clicking on the lever to get themselves heroin.

I think that the most primal thing of all is being healthy and spreading one's genes isn't dealt with in any of the primal laws.

I was just speaking of the process of evolution by natural selection. "Survival of the fittest" basically means reproduction of the fittest: the best of the species have the most offspring, so their genes persist.

So anything which prohibits or inhibits that is, by my definition (and any evolutionary definition), not primal. But that was a side-comment, anyway.

So, instead of watching a moving and fapping to meet the demands of a hormonal load...
Young dudes should really be out knocking up young ladies with babies they are not prepared to/nor have any to intention to raise/care for because it's an evolutionary "win"...

    Awesome!

Maybe you didn't read the articles or watch the video.

I think people should be healthy, and I was kinda under the impression that the main point of MDA is to educate and encourage healthy living. The information documented in the articles and video thoroughly show how destructive it is for dudes to consume internet porn, and therefore the people who wish to be healthy should work to avoid internet porn. Anything beyond that, just, yeah, whatever, you're right.

I was just about to say almost exactly the same thing...

As with most of the hypernormal stimuli in our modern environment, the dose makes the poison IMO.

Watch porn once a month? Probably not going to have much, if any, effect on your overall sexual life. Watch it several times a week or every day? Yeah, then you're probably going to have some problems--and you're going to start getting into more and more hardcore porn to get the same level of gratification from it, and so on in the classic syndrome of addiction to anything.

Same thing is true of sugar, alcohol, grains, industrial oils, stressful work environments, staying up too late, and everything else we do that's not optimally good for us but is awfully fun every once in a while.

And, as with most hypernormal stimuli, it's addictive. So you definitely have to be conscious of that and abstain if you're not willing or able to control your intake to reasonable, occasional use. But yeah, in general I'd have to agree that porn (specifically internet video porn, which offers by far the most unnatural variety and quantity of novel material, which seems to be the trigger that causes the desensitization to "normal" sexual stimulation) is a big problem for many men.

That TED talk is definitely worth watching; seen it before.

As far as whether it's Primal or moral or whatever: I don't think it's a moral issue at all, just a mental health/happiness issue. And I heartily disagree with your previously mentioned opinions on family size, reproduction, etc. We don't have to let our genetic imperatives rule our lives; evolution is amoral and we can choose to disobey the dictates of natural selection as rational, sentient beings if we wish. You shouldn't judge people for making different decisions than you would, if they're not causing any harm to others.

Today I will: Eat food, not poison. Plan for success, not settle for failure. Live my real life, not a virtual one. Move and grow, not sit and die.

So here are brain scans of dopamine activity between healthy people (on the left) and then on the right, the addicts (comparable to porn addicts, as shown in the video):

So instead of, "This is your brain on drugs", schools could also say, "This is your brain on internet porn."

What that is is one sided alarm-ism...
Lots of dudes watch a little porn and fap, and have sex.
Addictions happen to lots of people.
Porn addiction happened before the internet ever existed... there were guys with stacks of magazines that filled entire closets, or VHS tapes that filled entire cabinets. Or before that guys that spent money at cheap peep-shows like they had a gambling addiction.
There are all sorts of sex addicts. The internet makes it more convenient, it does not "create" it.

And for the high school and college dudes fapping away to the latest and greatest porn. They'll eventually settle down and have a couple of gaddam kids most likely... just like you want them to.

BTW... I've seen a similar thing that showed the SAME response in the brains of people who play ANY video game, not even violent or sexual... even like Mario Cart.
    It's a freaking stimulation response.

Alright, so you don't agree with the video and articles. That's cool. Some people aren't into the paleo diet, either. Different strokes for different folks.
