You should check out "Food, Inc". It's a great documentary about GMOs and the food industry today. Besides being unhealthy (and how unhealthy GMOs really are, I don't know), I think they have large economic consequences. You have a handful of companies decided how vegetables, fruits, and animals are being grown and raised instead of farmers. Plus they have a huge influence in the FDA and politics.

If you can, I say go local and organic. Plus this article says that anti-GMO organizations are promoting propaganda, and this article is doing the same thing for the other side (in my opinion).
