Anyone remember when Reagan said (as a cost cutting item for the school lunch program) that ketchup was a vegetable? I do, and it was enforced at our school. You could get 2 servings of vegis. If you wanted ketchup on your hamburger or hotdog, that was counted as one vegetable. I remember a lot of hungry high school guys who did reduced fee lunches.

Michelle O is, like others said, following CW. As have so many other, including the teachers who will be teaching health to these kids.

Lets see if we can start a campaign to get her to convert!

Agree with M Obama trying to improve school meals, though as others have said pity she has bought into CW rather than paleo.
Surprised at the amount of venom on this thread. Can only assume it is related to whatever political party you support.

I think as part of society, governments should intervene in the interest of Public Health. At the moment the big pharmaceutical companies and large corporations have far too much influence. Unfortunately I think most governments world wide buy into all the health advise funded by large corporations etc. how bad has the obesity epidemic got to get before they realise that they need to do something different.
So sad looking at kids and adults who look like they have fat suits on, their faces and bodies really bloated. Yet they are told to eat CW.

This thread isn't about what would actually work for our children, all of our children, it's an excuse to grind the libertarian axe against Obama and the big bad government. Have at it Hoss but your thread sux big time. I came here because I want to learn to eat a more healthy diet and to live a more healthy lifestyle. I didn't come here to discuss hateful political views. We're all in this together but for some that isn't true.

Vouchers give religious education public money. I believe in separation of church and state as it's stated in our constitution. We need to address our problems in ways that are beneficial to us all and public education would benefit from being funded as fully as the military is but that won't happen with this mind set.

I won't say anymore...but this is disappointing to me.

850 calories might seem like a large lunch, but keep in mind that a lot of kids (all over the US) EAT THIS AS THEIR ONLY MEAL... which puts the caloric load in a different light, as 850/day is NOT enough for a teenager.

Unfortunately, it happens, and it is not that uncommon amongst kids that are on the school lunch program... either money is too tight at home or the parents aren't really "all there" (physically, emotionally, you name it)...

and, while I agree with the sentiment of "don't have kids if you can't afford to take care of them"... not everyone is lucky/educated enough to fully grasp and implement that concept (and sometimes life throws a curveball and s*** hits the fan, too.)

They are government schools so government makes the decisions. GET YOUR KIDS OUT OF GOVERNMENT SCHOOLS!!! People need to take responsibility for their own kids and stop handing them over to the government everyday. DEMAND school choice from your representatives.

If there were a voucher program there soon would be many private schools that have no religious connections whatsoever. Government has proven over and over again that they cannot do a respectable job of educating our children. Wouldn't it be nice if even very poor parents could get there children out of a bad school and into a school of THEIR choice? If you would rather grind your anti religion ax than give PARENTS a real CHOICE in their child's future that is your problem. And please tell me how understanding that government, ALL government does hardly anything well makes a person "hateful".

I pack my daughter's lunch since she does not like what they consider healthy. My students keep snacks in their lockers because they are hungry. Why are they hungry?? Many lunches consist of multiple servings of grains (I kid you not, they will serve 3 breadsticks with marinara sauce, a dinner roll, a brownie and a cheese stick-ugh!) and a 6th grader burns that off quick.

The problem with vouchers is that it is still taxpayer stolen and money and still ultimately under government control. How long before government starts passing rules, regulations, and attaching "strings" to any educational institution that wants to be eligible for voucher funds? Within a decade or so, the system would be indistinguishable from the one we have now. We throw the word "socialist" around but we have to understand that there are no socialists anymore. It doesn't work. Almost all socialists in the West have converted to Fascism. It is a far more subtle and effective, and at the end of the day, you get the same result.

The only effective solution to the education crisis in this country is to get rid of government schools and replace them with nothing. Unleash the power of the market to create a vibrant and competitive education industry.
