hence my reluctance to get any more bees. i hate chemicals alot. i do know none of the organic beekeepers in the north island survived varroa arriving and they do talk about a 2 yr re-infestation phase at the start of it arriving. that is apparently how long it takes to wipe out the feral hives so they stop re-infecting your bees. i inspected a beehive for AFB down the road from my mate who keeps bees. they had a nasty nasty infestation of varroa but wont treat it with chemicals. they were essential oiling it and peppering the varroa mites with dead varroa mites last time i heard. it will be interesting to see if it works. my mate has a very strong hive just down the road so my guess is they will rob the other bees the moment they get weak.Even if you chem the snot out of your hives the mites wind up right back in them and they have said that it affects the bee health too, so they prefer gentler management and doing a bit more work instead... ending in much the same results.
havent seen any crazies with shotguns around here yet. i heard quite a few in the distance on saturday tho!
