What you said suggests that I can bad mouth my own country (which I can...), but if I bad mouth another country, or their values, then they can "Retaliate". At least that's how it sounded to me, when I read it. As far as I'm concerned, that's an act of war.

Nady, free speech is free speech. I can criticize any government I want, and I do. Thank you very much.

Here's where I think we may be differing - I don't feel my freedom of speech is given to me or allowed by my government. I feel it is a right that is given to me by my Creator, and one that my government (fortunately) has said it will guarantee. Had it not guaranteed that right, I still would have it, though it would be tremendously more difficult.
i feel freedom of speech has nothing to do with where you reside, just that it tends to be easier to assert that freedom in the United States.

I am amazed at how many here don't understand the First Amendment regarding freedom of speech ~ it isn't about having the God given right to speak out, it's about having the American government's promise not to prosecute for that speech. Not all countries have that protection~ this one didn't before the Revolutionary War. The right to speak without fear of prosecution.

I'm sure Jefferson would have assumed common sense, civility and the endeavour to live peaceably, would still be 'essential elements' in the 20th and 21st centuries.

Also....you can claim whatever rights and priveleges that you misunderstand, as long as you are on US soil. I don't think Youtube qualifies as US soil.

Fuck the first amendment. I was born with that freedom by default, and it's MY responsibility to defend it at all times and in all places. Whatever pile of dirt I was born on has nothing to do with my self-asserted right as a living being.

That's still not the point. Just because other countries don't protect the basic human right to free speech that doesn't mean that right isn't given to them by their Creator, just that their country doesn't recognize that right.

They may also not recognize the equality of men and women, or that the sexual innocence of children should be protected. But those are still basic human rights that are not granted by any government.

If I am not on foreign soil, there is no mandate that I abandon my rights because someone in another country doesn't feel I should have them.

Founding fathers believed we were born with certain rights. These rights are not given to us by govt. govt is there to protect these rights. I don't understand how there are Americans that don't understand this basic fact. It's pathetic.
