    It's based on the assumption that everybody eats grains. The people who eat whole grains would weigh less than the people who eat simple carbs like white bread etc.

    But do they weigh less because of the kind of grain they eat or because people who eat whole grains tend to be more health conscious otherwise?

    The latter. This is similar to the studies that state those who eat breakfast are healthier. It's a simple correlation; basically those who eat breakfast are doing so because they're trying to be "healthy" and therefore weigh less than the average person who skips breakfast. Similar logical fallacy here.

    I recently read an article from 2008 to that affect, well it was whole grain over refined grain actually. They needed a 3rd study group of no grains, but it was funded in part by The General Mills Bell Institute of Health and Human Nutrition. hmmmm
