    Neighbor Noise

    Primal Fuel
I'm really, and I mean really, annoyed when my neighbors make noise. I wouldn't mind it if it was rare, but it's the norm. It's either loud music, or their kids stomping around, kids yelling, or their dog in the backyard barking when my windows are open because I'm trying to let some cool air into the house in the evening...

I'm doing some work at my desk. And even now, they aren't home, but their dog is howling and has been doing so all day. It's not loud, but it's just a constant, low, high pitched dog howl I can hear through the wall, and I have to admit it's driving me insane. It's been going on ALL FUCKING DAY. I don't mind dogs, in fact I like playing with them, but I can't stand my fucking neighbors.

SHUT THE HELL UP DOG! IT'S BEEN 9 HOURS THAT YOU'VE BEEN HOWLING! DON'T YOU REALIZE YOUR HOWLING IS NOT GOING TO BRING YOUR STUPID OWNERS HOME ANY FASTER?

AS I TYPE THIS HE JUST KEEPS HOWLING! I WANT TO SCREAM! My anger towards my neighbors is to the point where if tomorrow I heard they were in some terrible accident, I wouldn't blink an eye. I'm a nice person, but these people are not suited for living in a sane society. They let their kids run around like wild animals in their house and in the neighborhood, screaming and all, leaving all types of garbage around the neighborhood, toys, etc. They have parties all the time, drink a lot, smoke heavily, and most certainly do some sort of drugs, and their kids seem to have slight mental retardation because they probably did all this while they were pregnant. I hope they move out.

Not that I can't relate, and I totally feel your pain, but have you thought about moving out to the middle of a 50 acre parcel in Montana?

I once got into a yelling match over something like that.

They can't make noise if they're dead. Just sayin'.

Well, have you tried talking to them? Maybe they're not reasonable people. On the other hand, maybe they just don't realize it's bothering you.

What type of work are you trying to get done? I'm assuming you either work from home or are talking about housekeeping type stuff. If it's the former, you can try to find a decent third space with WiFi and work there. Try to find some earplugs for sleeping I guess.

Although, there's no reason you should have to adjust your lifestyle to accomodate them being unreasonable. You're well within your rights to involve the police. Good luck.

Call animal control. Seriously. I'm a dog person but yes, I understand dogs barking on occasion but if it's constant you have a right to be pissed. There was a dog a couple streets away that people had chained in the yard that howled and cried all day and night. I felt sorry for the dog but it would freak our dogs out and they'd have bark-fests at 3AM. We reported them and within a couple of days no more howling/crying.

As for the kids, unless they appear to be neglected or abused they're allowed to make noise within certain hours. Check the ordinances in your city to see what is and isn't allowed and at what times. If they break the sound curfews report them. You can do so anonymously. If it annoys them enough then maybe they'll move. Otherwise you'll have to move.

Get them a nice shiny electronic stimulus (shock) bark collar as a gift. If they don't get the hint, call animal control.

I wish there was something I could use to shock people who are mean to dogs.

If you haven't already, just talk to them first.

If things do not change, then consider calling animal control or whatever. But it's not likely toing to result in anything other than upsetting your neighbors and possibly causing an unnecessary conflict.

perhaps consider working to music that you like as a noise buffer or wear ear plugs or those bose sound-reducing head phones. At least for when you are working and it's bothering you.

If the neighbors are as described then I wouldn't talk to them about it first. If they were reasonable people they wouldn't be causing these problems, and some neighbor asking them to curtail the noise of their dogs/parties/children will be met with being ignored at best, hostility at worst. And once you've talked to them they'll know exactly who reported the problem and make your life hell. You can make anonymous reports and they wouldn't know who called.
