Get a kettlebell or make a sandbag.

Coach Palfrey has a blog dedicated to sandbag fitness: http://www.marksdailyapple.com/forum/thread53208.html

I don't really know of a good substitute for a barbell deadlift. I've never used a sandbag, so I don't know how it compares. Glute/ham raises can hit your glutes and hamstrings (obviosuly) and also, isometrically, your back/core.

Sandbag Fitness: Exercise Technique Series - The Sandbag Deadlift here is the technique.

You can make a sandbag out of a sturdy dufflebag.

Whether you use a sandbag or some other weight, you cannot replicate a deadlift without actually lifting something.

There are some issues with the sandbag deadlift (namely that it works better with handles), but compared to not deadlifting at all - it's a good choice. It terms of making your own, the simplest option is to get an old duffel bag or holdall and add 1 or more bags of builders sand to it. These can be reduced in weight and taped if needs be.

For deadlifts you won't need to worry so much about the integrity of the bag - just grip it and lift.

One-legged Romanian deadlifts! Awesome. Do them standing on a pillow, or with dumbbells, or both, for added difficulty.

LOL! Of course it's stupid if you aren't strong enough yet, or haven't practiced the movement enough on a solid surface to get your balance. After that, it's a perfectly acceptable way to increase the difficulty of a movement.

Read Mark Lauren, among others. Google "bodyweight work on unstable surface" and you'll find myriad recommendations to use this technique for everything from pushups to V-sits.
