Do any of you lambasting Barbie actually know what the Romanian deadlift is? As she states its was from Mark Laurens "You are Your Own Gym", which is extensively only bodyweight excercises, repeat BODYWEIGHT!

Having actually done them whilst stood on a cushion, by a miracle of physics, I have managed to touch my toes, straighten, and live to tell the tale, and if I had of fallen off, I'm pretty sure falling off a cushion onto my living room floor, probably wouldn't have put me in intensive care, it weren't as if I was doing um stood on top of a set of fucking step ladders!

Also having your hands reaching down (you've heard of hands I take it) does offer some amount of safety if you do lose balance, or should I have done them wearing handcuffs?!

    Cheers

The deadlift in YAYOG isn't a deadlift by any conventional standards.

Spot on Coach, more of a hamstring stretching/strengthening excercise, I would say.

    Cheers

Agreed - still very useful of course. And I'd actually say that most deadlifting newbies should spend a reasonable portion of their time working on their hamstrings during the early stages of learning the lift. I find good mornings to be a great assistance exercise.

I didn't read much of this thread, but going by page 5, two things emerge:

    1. Mark Laurens is a bum
    2. Don't take weight lifting advice from a Barbie

So you're calling the man who was in the a US special forces and was their fitness instructer a 'bum'?

You're either incredibly brave, or remarkably stupid!!

I'll go for the former, as I'm feeling kind!

    Cheers

If you really want to do deadlifts, then buy a bar and strap sandbags to the ends. Works for me.
